Commercial Description:
The newest Abita brew takes its name and inspiration from the Mardi Gras Indians of New Orleans. Looking for Indians on Mardi Gras Day is a tradition for many New Orleans families. A cultural phenomenon familiar to residents of the Crescent City, the Mardi Gras Indians are not well known to outsiders and Abita is proud to help share their story with the world.

Pours a gorgeous dark orange with a 3/4-inch head that recedes slowly. Aroma is pretty typical: Good old grapefruity hops and other citrus fruits. Flavor is pretty malty for an IPA, and it works out well. The hoppiness is medium, average for the style. There is also a distinct floral essence in the center. Finishes pretty dry. Mouthfeel is full, thicker viscosity. A very nice IPA, in my opinion. I could drink a lot of this, actually. Underrated. Overall, very good. Thanks Abita.

Reviewed 4/27/2009 (Bottle): Pours a light amber brown clear colored body, foamy off-white head, lasting-ish. Hoppy aroma, earthy. Pungent. Malty taste, some fruity, citrusy notes. Hoppy taste. Less hops as it warms up, more sweet and malty. Eh.

A - Pours a nice amber color with a thick/frothy head. Nice carbonation and lots of lacing down the side of a clean glass. Very nice S - Not a very aromatic IPA. Aromas of caramel malt dominate slight citrus/floral smells. T - Not a bad tasting beer, but a very underwhelming IPA. Mostly malt sweetness with a little bitterness trying to come through but having a hard time doing so. Can’t tell much about particular hop variety due to malts bullying the flavor. M - Nice, with such a fine pouring beer it’s tough to not have a solid texture, body, and overall mouthfeel experience. D - A drinkable beer, actually the appearance and texture make up a lot for it’s other deficiencies, but just not a very good IPA in my opinion. When offered an Abita, I’ll hope for a Turbodog.

Bottle sampled at SF International Beer Fest. Pretty standard for the style. Copper color, white head. Hops and caramel malt on the aroma and flavor, some earth. Typical mouthfeel with a crisp finish.

Bottle. One penny copper in color with a pure white head. Aroma is earthy hops. Flavor is a well balanced hoppy and caramel malty mix with a crisp woodsy finish. A great IPA to drink all night.

nice clear copper color with foamy and pillowy two finger head. Floral but muted hoppy notes with quaint touches of pine and distant grapefruit citrus. The body has a nice woodsy backbone of hop touch with a quality caramel toasted sugar roundedness. In all it provides for a nice amount of balance and total mouthfeel and overall yields a pretty nice brew.

12oz bottle. Pours a golden amber body with an off-white, lacing head. Smells of citrus and sweet hops with a caramel, malty nose. Tastes the same but more citrus hops. Finish is a little bitter with some sweetness.
