Pours a dark hazelnut brown color with some red highlights. Smells malty and a bit smokey, with almost a bit of a bourbon/whiskey smell there as well. Tastes malty, nice and toasty. Thinnish mouthfeel, with good carbonation. Nice beer, never had Abita Brewing’s products before but I really like this one.

Oct 9, 2008 Bottled. Pours nice dark umber. Head comes out beautifully but evaporates almost instantly. Aroma is earthy with a sweet malt presence balanced with a nice hop aroma. Unfortunately it smelled much better than it tasted. It was way to carbonated. It started smooth chocolate and coffee but the carbonation overpowered the palate and destroyed any sweetness the hops may have provided. You could however tell it was dry hopped as the bitterness was nevertheless present and unbalanced. Too bad, it looked good.

Oct 9, 2008 Pours a dark brown with a minimal tan head. Great smells of toffee brown sugar and coffee. Tastes like caramel and coffee and a bit strong, though extremely drinkable.

Oct 9, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a murky dark brown body with a thin film of light tan head. Smells very malty, with caramel, toffee, and brown sugar ruling - very pleasing. Tastes like caramel, toffee, and brown sugar, with some hints at chocolate and coffee. On the lighter side of medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Extremely drinkable, definitely disappears before I’m ready to see it go. A flavorful quaffable easy drinking beer. One I’ll definitely be getting again - one of the finest brown ales I’ve had, and definitely makes me think twice about the quality of beers in the South - awesome brew!

Oct 7, 2008 Bottle from Total Wine in Roseville, CA. Poured a dark brown with a tan head. Hints of chocolate and nuts in the flavor. A somewhat thin-bodied beer, that goes down smooth. Very drinkable beer.

Oct 7, 2008 12 oz bottle and draught all over ATL. Pours a deep dark semi-opaque ebony brown with moderate tannish crow that has semi-moderate retention. Aroma is not very robust for a robust-looking beer. It is reminiscent of roasted and chocolate malt, with some nuttiness, but always with a small hint of oxidation. Flavour is also thin with nuts, chocolate malt, roasted malt, and a little bit of hop bitterness in the middle of the taste that’s brought out by the spritely carbonation, but finishes a little bitter with some grassy aromas. The body is also surprisingly thin. I didn’t find this beer to be very palatable or drinkable to my liking. I see how it could be drinkable to many but I need something that’s a little more aggressive or more strongly balanced with heartier malts.
