Commercial Description:
Huge, copper-colored, bottle-conditioned ale, still hot off the presses, Achel Trappist Extra is the latest from the tiny brewery at the St. Benedictus Abbey at Achel, in the Northeast of Belgium. At this year's World Beer Championships in Chicago, the Extra was easily the best of the many Trappist beers tasted, scoring 97 points and an "Exceptional" rating. You will find this a very satisfying beer, with just a little malt sweetness, dried fruit flavors, warm sherry notes, and a brisk balancing backdrop of fresh hop bitterness.

Bottle shared by Andy in St. Louis, purchased at Wine and Cheese Place. Pours a cloudy brown/plum color with a small white head. Big raisin aroma, with notes of brown sugar, Belgian yeast, sherry, wood, and a touch of hops. Flavor is also led by raisins, with brown sugar, yeast, wood, sherry, sweet malts, caramel, and warming alcohol. Medium-full bodied, good level of carbonation, and smooth. Really nice beer.

750ml bottle, pours a mostly clear dark amber with a good sized off-white head that leaves nice sheets of lace. Aroma is nice lightly spiced yeast, candied and overripe dark fruits, and a little caramel. Flavor is a nice blend of the spicy yeast and dark fruits. There’s just enough of both to balance this out very well without turning overly sweet or spicy. Good stuff and easy drinking, but not as much complexity as some of the top Quads.

Bottle dated use by 9/09. Poured q mahogany caramel cloudy color. Nose was yeasty with typical candied sugars. Flavor is classic Belgian. I’ve had this many times and it is definitely a favorite of mine just never got around to rating it. Great depth of fllavor. Some fruit notes and some sweetness with a great malt yeast balance. Excellant.

Bready candy caramel Belgian aroma. Small head, brown and murky. Not too sweet, smooth malty dark fruity raisin.

75cl bottle shared with my father hazy brown, offwhite or light brown head. aroma ofdark fruits, raisins, and spices. overall mild aroma, well blended. flavor is fiant dark fruits, licorice, alc. much more potent flavor than aroma. overall a well blended belgian, but alc seems to be perhaps a little bit too high for the brew.

750 mL bottle at St. Veronus. Dark ruby brown with a two-finger beige head. Aroma is quite spicy, with some caramel, prunes, and candi-sugar. The flavour was deliciously spicy as well, with all the aromas continuing into the flavour and balancing nicely. Some bitterness at the end seemed to be hop rather than alcohol based. The alcohol is actually very well hidden. Excellent beer.

I tried this beer on September 24, 2009 at "The beerbistro" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured out a murky brown colour with reddish hues and a thin white head. The aroma was malt, yeast, and plenty of dark fruit tones like plums. The mouthful was fulkl-bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour was plums and licorice with a hint of hoppy bitterness. An excellent beer.
