Commercial Description:
Huge, copper-colored, bottle-conditioned ale, still hot off the presses, Achel Trappist Extra is the latest from the tiny brewery at the St. Benedictus Abbey at Achel, in the Northeast of Belgium. At this year's World Beer Championships in Chicago, the Extra was easily the best of the many Trappist beers tasted, scoring 97 points and an "Exceptional" rating. You will find this a very satisfying beer, with just a little malt sweetness, dried fruit flavors, warm sherry notes, and a brisk balancing backdrop of fresh hop bitterness.

750 ml bottle. Medium-sized, dense and creamy tan head. Pours very unclear, almost myddy brown. Fizzy carbonation. Sweet malty and yeasty nose. Notes of dried dark fruits and spices. Taste is fruity-sweet; plums, dark berries and raisins. Distinct sweetish malts and yeast flavors as well. Low hop level. Medium to full body. Warming alcohol, sweetness and mild spices in the finish. A powerful quadrupel, but not top end. This bottle was cellared for nearly a year, and will surely take benefit of longer aging.

Bottle (75 cl) from Systembolaget. Pours dark amber to brown, with a moderate beige head. Aroma is full of roasted malts with notes of toffee and burnt sugar, along with earthy yeast aromas, and a light touch of alcohol. Medium bodied and very smooth. A bit unbalanced flavour, too much sweetness and low bitterness.

Holy Crap this is great. Pours dark murky brown with an amber tint with a rich tan head that has moderate retention. The aroma has a good amount of caramel malt that is quite doughy and rich with some Belgium-style earthy yeastiness along with some toffee. Medium / full body that has richness and a fair amount of frothy soft carbonation. The flavor starts with bready toffee, thick earthiness, brown sugar and figs. The finish gets a bit sharper in comparison to the initial taste with some sharp spice. This continues to change and evolve throughout the bottle. Thumbs vigorously up for this fantastic example of a Belgium quad. This could be my favorite of the style. Truly amazing.

Bottle courtesy of Boboski: Poured a deep brown color ale with a huge foamy head with perfect retention. Aroma of cookie dough malt is just about perfect. Taste is also dominated by cookie dough malt with some nice sweet malt and a mild yeasty finish. Alcohol was well concealed with a nice full body. I thought this was somewhat reminiscent of Rochefort 10 but maybe a tad more light and not as complex but still very rewarding.

750 ml. bottle. Pours a murky dark sandy brown color with a gorgeous thick creamy and frosty beige head. Aroma of fresh yeast, nutmeg, dates, prunes, plums, and brown sugar. Taste is a very complex mixture of dates, brown sugar, plums, prunes, nutmeg and the freshest of yeasts. Excellent !! One of the best Trappist beers out there.
