Commercial Description:
Huge, copper-colored, bottle-conditioned ale, still hot off the presses, Achel Trappist Extra is the latest from the tiny brewery at the St. Benedictus Abbey at Achel, in the Northeast of Belgium. At this year's World Beer Championships in Chicago, the Extra was easily the best of the many Trappist beers tasted, scoring 97 points and an "Exceptional" rating. You will find this a very satisfying beer, with just a little malt sweetness, dried fruit flavors, warm sherry notes, and a brisk balancing backdrop of fresh hop bitterness.

Bottle: BBD 12/07- Sour, lightly fruity nose (cherries, pears), with a bit of yeast; flavors include dates and raisins, yeast and musty hops; sweet front end with a sour cherry snappy finish, fairly clean for a Belgian.

(Bottle) Pours brown/red with a small white head. Yeasty, spicy, fruity, allmond paste aroma with some alcohol. Sweet and malty. Earthy with some liquorice. Hints of cardemom, artificial cherries, strawbeery yoghurt and tobacco. Spicy mouthfeel with some yeast. A lot of allmon paste in flavour. Medium sweet with medium carbonation. A bit stale but with a nice sour sting in the end. Coctail berries both in nose and flavour.

Nut brown beer with eggwhite like specks floating arround. The foam is white-beige and falls douwn quickly. Aroma is very nutty, fruity, malty and has hints of mild honey. The taste is very good and complex. Balans is nice and the alcohol is present but well melted together with the full boddied carracter of the beer. Afthertaste is soft fruity, malty with hints of nuts and ends with a soft bittering.

(75 cl bottle at The Rover, Göteborg; last bottle) Shady brownish a bit red color with yeast particles, tan head. Sweet alcohol and almond scent. High co2 and spritzy co2 like body. Very spicy and also alcohol taste, also reminds me of strawberry yogurt. Warming feeling. Some bitter aftertaste.

Bottled. Very dark brown with a rather large head. Now this is really good. Complex without getting your tastebud all stresssed out.

Bottled at Horsens Beerfestival. Clear, copper-colored beer with a huge beige head. Sweet aroma with dried fruits and cellar notes. The same goes for the flavor, but there is some alcohol in it as well. Full-bodied, and a finish with alcohol and spices. (061028)

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a huge head that is retained very well. On the bottle they recommend to drink the beer at room temperature and that is what I did. Aromas are dominated by caramel and some sweet chocolate tones. The flavor has a bit of alcohol, but also a certain spiciness as well as caramel. Nice full mouthfeel, an excellent beer.
