Commercial Description:
Huge, copper-colored, bottle-conditioned ale, still hot off the presses, Achel Trappist Extra is the latest from the tiny brewery at the St. Benedictus Abbey at Achel, in the Northeast of Belgium. At this year's World Beer Championships in Chicago, the Extra was easily the best of the many Trappist beers tasted, scoring 97 points and an "Exceptional" rating. You will find this a very satisfying beer, with just a little malt sweetness, dried fruit flavors, warm sherry notes, and a brisk balancing backdrop of fresh hop bitterness.

Slightly hazy brown under a big fluffy white head that diminishes to leave a healthy moderate head. Dark fruit, sweet candi sugar, yeast, and a touch of citrus constitute this beers pleasant aroma. The flavor is sweet and caramely up front, tings then open up a bit with some less sweet fruity flavors coming through. The finish is quite sweet. Full bodied and a real teeth coater. The alcohol comes through as a tad on the palate but is more noticeable in the pleasant post swallow numbness throughout the mouth. Overall a very nice beer, this beer could be excellent if just a tad of the sweetness was shaved off of the top. Regardless the best of the three Achel brews I have had the pleasure of drinking.

Bottle from Super Saver. This one pours hazy deep rubyish brown colored with 1-finger off-white head. Aromas of heavy plum, figs, fruit, brown sugar, peaty malt, some vinous notes. Tastes of figgy fruit, with plum, grapes, brown sugar, earthy malt, some vanilla, and some oaky undertones. It is very complex and smooth on the tongue, with no apparent heat until the very end. You need to get ya some of this!

Achel pours murky dark brown with a creamy large light brown head, excelent lacing. Aroma is moderatly malty of toasted molasses and prunes, and oranges and a bit earthy. Taste is sweet and complex, Medium to full bodied creamy low carbination. Finish is average duration slighty alcoholic and a hint of a matallic taste.

750 ml bottle, ’03 vintage. Taste is like rum soaked raisin bread. Warming alcohol body is more prominent once it warms. I really want a few more of these as it was the best beer of a really nice tasting.

Not much aroma. Very sweet and sugary. A nice strong beer that you wouldn’t know it. Sad I was late for the tasting now and missed the blond.

I have to thank an awesome person named Amy for this beer. She’s got to be one of the most knowledgeable people I know about beer, forget that the fact she’s a she! That just makes it all the more awesome. But I digress. On to the beer. Aroma is a bit winey, oaked, with lots of fruityness there. Appearance was a nice dark brown color. Mouthfeel was full and round with a pleasing feel, not overly hot at all. Flavors were a bit nutty, dark fruits, some black cherries, malty and definitely whiskey like. A very nice quad.
