| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 19, 2004 Dark brown, reddish hints. Good-sized sticky off-white head. Very malty aroma, good yeast dose. Very fruity (dates, grapes), but also has various other malty tones (chocolate, caramel). Gentle alcohol vapors. Rather acidic taste in a yeasty-fruity kind of way. More dates and green grapes. Achel yeast doesn’t provide any dryness. Sweet and closing to licorice at times. Honeyish, herbal. Mostly malty from the beginning until the end. Finish could use some punch. Highly carbonated, medium bodied. It’s just not very exciting and feels like it has been done already. erway (1002), Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 13, 2004 Lite brown with a great creamy head. Somewhat sour nose with some Gran Cru like spiciness. Slightly watery and oxidized. Some metallic flavors too. Maybe a bad bottle? Engelsmann (653), Copenhagen, Denmark

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Sep 12, 2004 After reading a few reviews, I see this beer is in fact Achelse Kluis Extra. Beer pours from 75 cl bottle into generic chalice glass a cloudy dark brown-red liquid with a small amount of off-white head that dissipates, but leaves a thin film. Plenty of stagnant floaties. Aroma is a faint molasses and licorice. Flavor is the same - alcohol is very well hidden. Not hoppy at all (which I like). I’m just not a fan of molasses or licorice, although the aroma and taste is faint and not significantly annoying. A great quad overall. bu11zeye (5675), Frisco, Texas, USA

Beuatiful aroma of molasses, bread, heavy alcohol, raisins, pepper, and cinnamon. Flavor of mostly molasses and alcohol with some dried fruits and spices. Enjoyable Trappist! jaymobrown (1360), Chicago, Illinois, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 24, 2004 Newly packaged as Achelse Kluis Extra. Caramel brown with amazingly frothy and sticky head. Nose had a peppery hint that never came through in the taste. Strong and sweet malt flavors with hints of plum and raisin, some of the 9.5%abv shows through in the finish which is dry and somewhat caramelly. A solid beer with some complexity.
