Commercial Description:
Huge, copper-colored, bottle-conditioned ale, still hot off the presses, Achel Trappist Extra is the latest from the tiny brewery at the St. Benedictus Abbey at Achel, in the Northeast of Belgium. At this year's World Beer Championships in Chicago, the Extra was easily the best of the many Trappist beers tasted, scoring 97 points and an "Exceptional" rating. You will find this a very satisfying beer, with just a little malt sweetness, dried fruit flavors, warm sherry notes, and a brisk balancing backdrop of fresh hop bitterness.

750ml cork finished bottle. Wow, the absolute definintion of seamless. This beer moves gracefullly between elements of toffee, raisins, slight cigar box, and ends with a light vanilla kiss. All this without a hint at the alcohol content. Just amazing. I haven’t had Westy yet but it’s hard to imagine a beer better than this. I would love to see a bottle with a few years of age on it.

Bottle...Simply put, this is the perfect beer. It has everything I ever wanted in a beer. Aroma, color, and, of course, a bitter taste with just the right amount of malty sweetness. PERFECT!!!

Wow, this is a great selection. Came in a 75cl bottle, which was very nice. This is a beer that gets better with age, I don’t know how old mine was but I found it in a box tucked way in the back of my favorite beer retailer, they guy at the counter had never seen it before. That was interesting. Poured a burnt umber color, with thin head that stuck around for a while. Immediate alcohol smell, but did not taste like alcohol. Very well crafted beer. Fantastic!!

I didn’t have high expectations for this beer. A generic label on a generic 750ml bottle, not the one pictured on this page, seemed amateurish and uninspired. It even has a lame hexagonal shield that says "Authentic Trappist Product." Could not be more boring. But it does say Achel Bruin Beer Extra, so I guess this is it. And it cost $12.95! As you can see by my score, this is an excellent, though unassuming beer. Dark and full-flavored without being overpowering. It is mellow and rich. Only Ommegang’s Three Philosophers is better in my opinion. The after taste is complex and lingers. very satisfying. The head effect matches the taste, smooth, unassuming, tranquil but not sleepy.

Big brawny malt flavor and aroma that is not all sugar. Sophisticated, bold. Deep dark fruts and extremely balanced. Overall better put together than Chimay Bleue (seems more finished) and more subtle than the straight up port-like Trois Pistoles, my favorite UniBelgian. Full AND subtle with luxuriant winding finiish. Thank you Jan Primus for trading me one of the best beers I’ve ever had. This could replace Chimay and I would not miss it.

75cL bottle, BBE 04/08. Pours a deep mahoghany color with very dense tan foam that leaves great lacing and never quite dies. Aroma is all sorts of dried fruits with subtle rum notes. Big malty flavor, more dried fruits, little bit of fig, finishes with plums soaked in rum. Very nice body, not too rich in the mouthfeel. World class and underrated by most in my book.

Excellent in every way. At $10 on sale, it is one of the most expensive beers I have purchased but it is well worth the price. It pours a dark, dirty brown with lots of yeast in the glass. Aroma has light fruit and very sweet malt, also light brandy and oak. Flavor is mostly sweet malt, some fruit again, caramel, sugar, and fermenting fruit. Thick and heavy. Hard to get better than this.
