Light aroma of caramel, brown sugar, hint of flowery hops. Almost medium bodied, slightly bitter, slightly sweet, brown malt stands out a bit. Lacking any bright spots. jah noth (1017), Rochester, New York, USA

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 3, 2004 Clear deep brown with short tan head. Malts were toasty and had a nice caramel flavor. This didn't mix well however with the overly sharp carbonation. I would have liked something smoother. IPFreely (1470), Lewiston, New York, USA

| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Nov 12, 2003 Nice looking beer here; unfortunately it can't decide what it is. An identity crisis embodied in a tasty malt beverage. The packaging pisses me off a bit: this is obvious an attempt by North Coast to expand their market a bit, yet they still use the "One of the ten best breweries in the world" accolade garned by NC from the "Beverage Tasting Institute" in 1998 on the front of the package, even though the fact that it is brewed by NC is mentioned only in tiny letters on the back. The aroma is lightly malty with a bit of one of those pre-mixed coffee drinks. The commercial description is right on about the cherries-I laughed when I saw that but believed it when I tasted the beer. This is actually a pretty dry brown with a sophisticated bitterness that grows exponentially to a wonderful peak. Other than that little separates this; in fact all elements seem a bit weak. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 2, 2003 Average looking brown ale with a cloudy brown coloring and a small cream colored head. Sweet caramel malt aroma, with a bit of currant in the background. The mouthfeel is rather thin. The entire flavor is rather mild - elements of nut, caramel, hops, and currant. Leaves a moderate bitterness on the tongue - more than I prefer in a brown ale.
