courtesy of Allen - pours a hazy brown colour with a little and persistent dark beige foam; nice lace; fairly malty aroma with notes of nuts and brownies; full-bodied and with a solid sweet malt backbone; slightly sticky and with a good bitterness; long malty, nutty and slightly herbal finish

50cl bottle, dark brown glass. Beer color even darker brown, thin but sticky head. Intense aroma of toffee, stewed fruit and hint of coffee, taste is very sweet at first: Raisins, caramel, cocoa. 6.3 % abv are noticeable throughout. Bitter finish with coffee note. Medium mouthfeel. Rather complex, with long-lasting bitter aftertaste. Not bad, but for special occasiuons.

Bottle. Pours coppery brown with a thin white head and a bit of lacing. Aroma was malt, nuts, salt and a hint of coffee. Flavour was also nutty, as well as roasty, woody and a bit spicy, with a touch of caramel. Fairly thin in the mouth with a bitter finish, I was expecting more, but having said that, still pleasant enough and quite sessionable.

Sweet roasted caramel aroma. Mahogany with large head. Flavour is bitterish with strong maltiness and hoppiness. Medium bodied, very little carbonation. Finishes with hoppy bitterness. Very complex, but well-balanced.

Bottle. Brown pour. Light colored head. Fruity aroma, raisins, port, caramel and some lightly oxidized smell. Flavor is nice, round and malty with raisins, fruit, caramel and maybe a hint of oxidation, but not enough to hurt the beer. Pretty nice brew.

Pours a dark reddish brown with two fingers of frothy ecru head and patchy lace. The nose is round fruity and roasty malt, like dark bread with light molasses, figs and lightly peppery hops. On the light side of medium-bodied it features fine carbonation and a lightly spicy, bitter-hopped finish. It also has a touch of cardboard-y oxidation, but I have no idea of when this bottle was packaged. Sweet malt with notes of fig, dark bread, faint molasses, pepper and light cardboard. This is an interesting enough beer, I just wonder if this particular bottle was a bit past it’s prime.

11/08/2007: Adnams Broadside Original looks murky and dark brown in the glass with a golden hue around the edges. It has a frothy beige head. The aroma presents mats and fruity cream. The flavor contains darkly roasted caramel and cooked apple. The flavors are strong, but are melded together well. This beer is balalnced and solid with a soft, mellow mouthfeel.

1 pint .9 fl. oz. bottle (Alc 6% Vol / Best Before 20 Nov 07 / 6233 1868) from Jungle Jim’s International Market in Fairfield, Ohio. Rating #438 for this beer.
