Commercial Description:
Cask; Seasonal - December. No longer available in bottle.
The original winter warmer, Tally-Ho is actually a barley wine brewed to a nineteenth century recipe. It’s sweet; it’s heart-warming; it’s rich - but watch out, it’s got a kick like a drayman’s horse!

Cask at Spring Brewtopia 2005... Murky, burnt caramel colored ale. No head. Malty nose with lots of green apple esters and chocolate notes. Well-balanced flavor with a soft blend of milk chocolate, toffee and alcohol. Full-bodied with an astringent mouthfeel. Lengthy, bitter, very drying finish. Generously hopped for an English barley wine.

04.16.05 Brewtopia ’05, cask. Root beer brown with medium tan head. Milk chocolate aromas, toffee, little hops. Boozy and chewy. Tons of alcohol dominate this mildy alcoholic beer. A bit bland but plenty sweet with soft dark fruits - raisin, caramelized pear - and mild alcohol spice; savory.

Cask at Maproom Chicago: Dark cola colored, with minimal head. Sticky prunish mouthfeel, with some raisin, almond, bread flavors. Slightly bitter up front. Thin for a barley wine.

From the beer engine at the Maproom in Chicago. Dark amber color with a thick tan head. The aroma is massive caramel with slight bread and some more toasty goodness. The taste is sweet caramel with peanuts. There are also some oranges and breadcrust. Finishes sweetly. Nice brew.

Bottle that Styles found in the Michigan Beer Repository. Best before date of 11-97. Brown color. Lots of floaties. Thin white head which is pretty amazing considering the age of this beast. Cola-like aroma. Sweetish and slightly oxidized malt. Thin mouthfeel. Fair at this stage of it’s life. I would like to try this fresh off the cask.

Cask at Buckeye. Dark ruby brown, started off with a short foamy head and some lacing that later became clear. Interesting aroma sweet fruits and hoppy. Palate was smooth, just thick enough to coat your mouth with flavor. Some of the fruity notes along wth the dry finish reminded me of grape tannins. A short shot of roast/chocolate towards the end. Very drinkable and plenty here to interest your palate.

Bottle: On the label it says best before 11-97, so whatever year that makes it. Aroma of wine, vinegar, chocolate, and a little tartness. Pours a dark reddish-brown with lots of sediment. Small off-white head. Not a lot of flavor up front. Has a vinuous, caramel, chocolate, and light apple finish. Thanks to Styles.

Cask @ Buckeye: Wow, dark color. I thought I had my order screwed up till I took a whiff. Soft, lightly sweet aroma of crystal malt and flowery hops. Flavors basically followed the aroma: Pleasantly malty sweet with a touch of flowery hops balancing everything out. Very mild compared to what I expect when I see a beer advertized as "barleywine". But that being said, it was quite pleasing and very drinkable.
