Tasted 17/02/2004. 500ml bottle with rude label from Malthouse, Wellington. Nice deep red amber colour with a thin off white head. Classic english aroma of caramel and woody hops. Flavour is no surprise; slightly more of a malt profile than hops - hints of apple. Palate is left with soft sweet malt flavours. A not too bitter bitter. Re-tasted 03/06/2006, 500ml bottle from Rumble’s. Quite nutty. Very dry. No apple this time but a little carbonic, which takes away from the flavour. Grass and wood in the bitterness. Pretty easy drinking.

Mid brown with a small tight white head and light carbonation. Spicy aroma, with an undernote of sweet malt. Full, hoppy flavour with some light malt flavours to balance, but still oriented towards the hops.

Coppery hue with a small fading fizzy head and some lace. The aroma has notes of hayfield, bready and caramel malts, apple, plum, grassy and aromatic hops, white pepper, allspice, and musty yeast esters. The taste is reserved bitters with a nice dose of malt backbone. The finish is dry and peppery, minor bitterness lingers. The feel is smooth and chalky, average. Well done but not anything at rave about, easy and quaffable.

Slightly hazy reddish amber with a full light tan head and medium lacing. Earthy, malty aroma with burnt sugar and some hops. Flavor left a bit to be desired but there was a nice hoppy bitterness. There was also an undefinably "musty" flavor that did not improve or dissipate as the beer warmed. Pretty clean finish.

Tasty stuff, off-white head lingers, transparent orange body... aroma honeyish with hop character. In the mouth it has a bit of spice and some slight earthy vegetable flavour. Not bad, but much better beers for this price.

Deep gold with a long lasting head. Lovely hoppy aroma, medium bodied with a well balanced palate, hoppy flavour hanging on giving a lip-smacking finish. Lovely beer, tho not that strong at 4.5%.(bottle bought at victoria wine)

500 ml bottle, purchased in Ottawa. Clear, slightly oily-looking copper-caramel body with a thick white mostly diminishing cap...caramel, grass and a bit of whiskey in the attractive nose...solid, moderately bitter flavor, rather thin and watery in the finish. Another decent but vastly overpriced (in N America anyway) British bitter...

Superior session ale. Big malty aroma with a cookie-like sweetness. Smooth, easy-drinking with hints of biscuit. Lots of warming alcohol in a lingering dry finish. Subtle spicy notes give it some real intrigue. Very satisfying.
