Commercial Description: We’ve brewed a beer in honour of William Godell, which is only available to Adnams pubs in casks from the beginning of June and by the bottle online or in our Adnams Cellar & Kitchen Stores from the end of June. The brew is based on a recipe from the early 1500s (as recorded by Richard Arnold in 1503 in his chronicle, Customs of London). During his lifetime, William Godell would have witnessed two major changes in brewing. Firstly, the change from brewing traditional ‘ale’ (brewed without hops) to brewing ‘beer’ with hops. Secondly, the predomination of men brewing rather than women. "I have to brewed a beer that combines these changes. It is a beer with hops (using the old recipe of barley, oats and wheat, but with a modern variety called Nelson Sauvign). The beer is 4.5% abv, light orange in colour, with a distinctive aroma of tropical fruits and gooseberries. The wheat and oats give the palate a smooth and creamy texture and hops add the tropical fruit flavours. I was our Brewster for the day, ably assisted by an all-women team from Adnams."
