Commercial Description:
Following century old recipes all malts made at the Schlenkerla brewery are dried by wood fire. While for the classic “Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier” traditionally beech has been – and still is – used, the malt for “Schlenkerla Oak Smoke” is kilned with oak wood. The resulting Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt. The hence complex smokiness in “Schlenkerla Oak Smoke” is paired with the multifaceted bitterness of finest Hallertau aroma hops. With 8% alcohol and Bernstein color it matures for months in the deep brewery cellars underneath Bamberg into a special treat for smoke beer lovers for Christmas.

On tap at Oldsmar Tap House (Tampa, FL). Pours a hazy yellow to amber color with thin white head. Aroma is malty, smoky, funky. Flavor is about the same with some notes of oak and chocolate. Tough to pick through the flavors with so much smokiness. Medium body with a smoky malt finish. Seems to be a great example of the style.

On tap at DBGB. Pours a clear orange with a small white head. Aroma of smoky meats, peat, bacon. Flavor is quite minty on the initial sip followed by berries, smoked wood, smoked meats. Hmm, didn’t really enjoy this one -- it was too minty. 7/4/6/3/13 [3.3/5]

Tap at Redlight. Pours a deep copper pour with a thick off white head. Smoked ham, caramel aroma. Caramel sweet malt, smoked meat, vanilla oak taste. Seems the oak came through more in the taste. Not a fan of the style, but this is done so well you can’t help but to not like it.

Tap at Schlenkerla. More subtle smoke like old floorboards. A bit fruit, honey Pretty brown amber, brown lacing head. Light herbal, oaken barrels, much more subtle than the marzen I have in parallel. Less burned. Honeyish light berries. Mellow, light mouthfeel Honey retronasal, leaves honey on the palate. A truly elegant rauchbier. I am bummed it wasnt possible to buy ny to take home :-(

(draught) clear dark amber colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of mellow smoke, wholemeal bread, light herbal hops, a touch of wood and alcohol. flavour is like a freshly smoked fatty salmon, with notes of bread and again some alcohol, quite smooth overall. heavy body with smooth carbonation and a long smoky finish.

Sampled on tap at Churchkey in Washington DC. I have to preface my rating by saying I HATE rauchbiers. They really aren’t my cup of tea. This one comes a transparent, caramel orange with a white head. When cold, the aroma was a little like smoked lox, but once it warmed up a sensational smoky oak aroma popped out. Unfortunately, like many smoked beers, cold smoke was all I smelled. The flavor also had a distinct peaty, smokiness but the oak really comes through well. It’s all about the oak. Close your eyes and it tastes like you’re eating a smoked gouda. While one dimensional, the flavors are definitely unique, even for the style. Finish was medium bodied with a hint of lingering sweetness. Easily the best smoked beer I’ve ever had, one I’d actually order again.
