Commercial Description:
The Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer is an unfiltered smokebeer, brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Bottom-fermenting yeast gives the reddish brown lentbeer a natural cloudiness. Its smokey aroma is already noticeable in the smell, combined with a fine hoppy note. In the drink the fullbodied, highly drinkable lentbeer shows its strong malty flavour, rounded up with the smokey taste and a light bitterness. Due to the nourishing yeast, the Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer has the "Brotzeit already included" (German word for afternoon snack). Served / Sold: - Only during lent from Ash Wednesday to Easter - Only from the wooden keg at the Schlenkerla Data: Original Gravity: 14.5% Alcohol: 5.5% EBU: 32

On Tap at Minneapolis Town Hall: Brown Color with Off White Head. Even Maltiness and A Strong Whiff of Smoke on the Nose. Fairly Simple Tasting Beer...Nice Lightly Sweet Malt Notes..Clean Mouthfeel. Smoke is the Dominant Flavor BUT unlike Many Other Smoked Beers, This One Has A Nice Even Balance to it...So Instead of Getting Back Handed by This Brew, You Can Thumb Wrestle Instead. Clean Light Dry Aftertaste. Nice Brew.

Draft, Max’s. Pours a clear, fiery orange-red color; fluffy white head with great retention and lacing. Smoke and roasted meat in the aroma; roasted malts and a slight hint of pepper and chocolate. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: relaxed carbonation; full, roasted and smoky character (inky; light vanilla creaminess); mildly spicy; incredibly drinkable and satisfying. Lengthy, smoky and dry chocolate finish.

Tap at IndeWildeman, Amsterdam. Not as promounced as the Marzen, but still typical Schlenkerla. Just lacked a certain something. Still good though.

This was delicious. Not a remarkable beer by appearance, but it struck the balance as well as any smoked beer: deliciously like bacon or salami but so smooth, balanced, sweet...as the description I read said, a dopplebock with smoke--perfect idea! (on tap, Town Hall, Minneapolis)

call me crazy, but i like the developments since 1516. this beer is a little much, smoke dominates every part of this beer. i could taste it an hour or so after drinking it. the best description i’ve heard yet of it was that it tasted like drinking "liquid bacon." not for me, but worth trying because everything is.

On tap at the Olde Forge. The limited availability suckered me in, and thank the beer gods for it! My first experience with smoked beers left me quite impressed. Thick, creamy head and amazing smoky aroma started this off well. Tastes like you’re drinking a well-aged, smoked Gouda with bacon. Perfect levels of carbonation made this a pleasure to drink. Just sweet enough to go down smoothly, with a well balanced hoppiness to match. Great beer.

On tap at Minneapolis Town Hall. Amber so dark I thought it was brown at first with a decent amount of off-white head. Excellent smoked flavor but without the bite of the wheat offerings.

Tap at Ginger Man. Deep brown beer with a touch of ruby colour and a light yeasty haze topped by a 1/2” of creamy white head. Really gorgeous looking pint. Nose is amazing, soft beechwood smoke over soft bready/doughy malts. Light toasted wheat and a chewy breadiness. A hint of sulfur and light munich malt as well. Smells amazing. Flavour is great as well, soft texture shows off the lightly kilned malts to their utmost, with the smoke serving to accent the inherent sweetness. Minerally bitterness on the back with a touch of sulfury flavour adds an interesting note to the malts. Warming brings up a hint of berryish fruits. So good, it’s almost sinful. My favourite Schlenkerla. Another lucky find for me.
