My sample came from a hand bottling that was about two weeks old. It was poured too cold, but I let it stand a good while before checking it out. Once warm, it was a clear amber lager with orange highlights and a tiny, big bubbled head. The aroma was of subtle smoke and wood. I picked up no oxidation; a good sign. Medium-bodied and watery with low carbonation - this was expected as it was originally served on cask with no forced carbonation and then sat for a spell in the flip top. Well-bittered, woodsy flavor. Low sweetness with restrained smoke. Finishes smoky with a bitter hop bite. I wasn’t disappointed and I may never have the opportunity to try this one fresh, but I’ll be very grateful if I do. Cheers to redlight for bottling this one for mgumby10 and I! wickedpete (629), Lexington Park, Maryland, USA

Not too heavy on the smoke in the aroma but it’s noticeable along with a sweet raisin and caramel note. Flavor has smoke, bacon, mesquite, toffee in the middle, slight bitterness in the finish, and a lingering smoke in the aftertaste. Medium thin body is crisp. Very nice. Pours a nice clear bright orangey woody brown with a massive lasting white head. Aroma is very smokey, yet, clean and refined- huge in smoked meats some light salmon, and constrained campfire- heavy on the smooth woody cold beechwood smokiness with some moderate sweet caramell nuttiness. Immense nutty toasty smokiness, tons of bacon, and smoked brisket and a drying smooht as hell finish. I was hungover as shit when I had this, but it still tasted fanstastic and I swore I felt 100 times better after I drank this. kseecs16 (914), Naperville, Illinois, USA

I was excited to be able to try this and was not let down. Red-brown amber body with a creamy lacing light tan head. Spicy aroma of german hops and hickory smoke. Flavor is malt with a complimentary smoke. Very tasty and quaffable. Holdwine (909), Beertimore, Maryland, USA

This is a great example. Slightly murky pour becoming a shinier (?) amber. Way too easy to drink, with a pleasant smoky maltiness. Reminds me of when we would burn brush on a crisp day. xmarcnolanx (807), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA

Aroma is of bacon, woodsmoke, sausage breakfast.... damn, it just smells delicious. Also has a presence of sweet malt that Shawn tells me is a purposeful under-attenuation.
The more I taste the beer, the more I can peel back the layers of sweet, sweet smoke and get to that wort essence. This is such a fantastically well crafted beer that words can hardly describe how the blending and balancing of flavors intermesh.

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 21, 2008 Draft @ 33 Wine Bar in STL. Pours brownish copper with a dense tan head. The aroma has lots of smoky malt that gives the impression of BBQ sauce, bacon, lots of wood and peat. Medium body that has lots of bubbly carbonation that helps distribute the flavor well. The taste is much more palatable that the aroma. There is lots of smokiness, but not as meaty as the aroma. Hops also make themselves known with a nice spiciness. The taste has as much of a well toasted malt as it does the smokiness. The finish is clean spicy and crisp. Further down the glass there is a good balance between the elements with the smoke taking more of a backseat. While this is not my favorite style at all this is a solid beer that is very good for what it is. ¾ (5009), Boulder, Colorado, USA

Extremely fresh, robust, lucious, frothy and delicious beer... the smoke is very well balanced, it’s not the dominant character of this beer, more like the 3rd or 4th thing you notice... it’s a smoky wheat bread crust flavor, slightly meaty, very chewy, bready, fresh, and delicious... beautiful play of the malt, wonderfully resinous, with a smokiness that goes from mild and nearly unnoticeable up front to more prominent over the middle to nearly coating the tongue in the finish. Awesome beer.
