Commercial Description:
The Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer is an unfiltered smokebeer, brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Bottom-fermenting yeast gives the reddish brown lentbeer a natural cloudiness. Its smokey aroma is already noticeable in the smell, combined with a fine hoppy note. In the drink the fullbodied, highly drinkable lentbeer shows its strong malty flavour, rounded up with the smokey taste and a light bitterness. Due to the nourishing yeast, the Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer has the "Brotzeit already included" (German word for afternoon snack). Served / Sold: - Only during lent from Ash Wednesday to Easter - Only from the wooden keg at the Schlenkerla Data: Original Gravity: 14.5% Alcohol: 5.5% EBU: 32

Draft. A chestnut amber beer with a huge creamy tan head. The aroma is sweet and very smokey giving it notes of bacon, tar, and wood. The flavor is very sweet with strong notes of smoke again giving it notes of bacon, wood, tar, but also caramel notes from the malt, leading to a dry smokey finish with a light bitterness. The flavor overpowers the aroma once you dig into the beer.Wow.

From tap at Ølbaren. Pours dark clear and golden amber with a huge and light tan head. Leathery smoked and roasted breadish malt aroma. Smoked bacon and salami flavoured with a subdued malty note. Dry and smoked solid base flavour with a light sweetness appearing towards the finish. Ends mild meaty and dry. Dry and bitter into the far finish.

Cask (gravity) @ Schlenkerla, 96049 Bamberg, Germany. Unclear light to medium amber brown color with a large, frothy - creamy, excellent lacing, fully lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, caramel, wood, moderate smoke. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet bitter with a long duration. Body is medium to full, texture is oily - creamy, carbonation is soft - flat. At last i manage to taste this beer, I was so excited. It is so nice and smooth and easy to drink. Delicious beer... the smoke is very well balanced. We was sitting in the Old Original room and did get more than 5 mugs of this fantastic beer, so nice ;o)) (200308)

Draught. Good smoky aroma, campfire and salami. Clear amber brown colour. Big stable creamy tan head. The flavour is nice and smoky, more or less like the aroma, but with a good nice maltiness on top. Flavourful and mellow.

Date: March 16, 2008
Mode: Draft, Nitro
Source: Brick Store Pub
Appearance: hazy burnt orange, fine beige head, scattered lace
Aroma: huge smokey wood aroma like a slab of hickory smoked bacon
Body: creamy body
Flavor: dry dark caramel malt flavor, layers and layers of smoke, lots of earthyness with the smoke keeps it very dry, very woody, touch of dark caramel sweetness tries to break through but can’t find its way through the smoke, by the third glass you become saturated with the smoke and the caramel sweetness blooms and provides the perfect balance to the smoked earth
Aroma: 7/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 8/10; Palate: 8/10; Overall: 16/20
Rating: 3.9/5.0
Drinkability: 6/10
Score: **4

Draught at Ølbaren, Copenhagen
Dark amber color; big creamy head. Intense smoky aroma, persistent, with impressions of sausages and fireplace in waves, even a light sourness typical of smoked sausages; creamy; wonderful. It has a medium-lean body, with good creamy caramel flavor, but less sweet than I like, and with a dark chocolate touch; of course, with a good smoke presence. The final is just a bit harsh (the roasted malt, roasted nuts), very bitter (maybe too much), and not sweet enough. Overall, an excellent beer, but I appreciate less roasted ones.
