ClarkVV (3547), Allston, Massachusetts, USA Jan 13, 2004 Updated: May 17, 2007 2003 bottle. Good ruddy, red-brown pour with some lighter oranges as well. Big creamy light-mocha colored head that sticks on top for most of the beer. Lots of lacing. Smells of sweet malt, slight smoked woodiness. No sediment of any sort and mostly clear, or I would have given it a 5 for appearance. Taste starts out with a semi-sweet, ultra balanced marzen flavor; light honey, good nutty hops, caramel malt. The smokiness comes on in the middle and slowly builds into a wonderful finish of smoke, smoke and more smoke. Like smoking a nice cuban while eating a bacon, and smoked gouda sandwich on brown bread (ok no one actually does that, but you get the point). Smoke is not subtle, but I did enjoy the fact that the flavors were layered and the marzen flavor was there at the start. Medium body, didnt get any thinning. Light carbonation, good stuff.
esox (99), Oulu, Finland Aug 21, 2008 Bottled. Very dark brown to amber colour. Nice, very creamy head is medium sized, white in colour and long lasting. Aroma has heavily smoked malts with some tar. Perhaps a hint of some dark berries? Almost no hops in this one. Slavor is sweet and malty, very distinctive wit this style. Palate is very smooth, soft carbonated and slic. A "warm" and smooth beer for slow sipping. roder_60 (871), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 17, 2008 Pours a beautiful clear dark amber brown with medium layer of froathy offwhite head. Aroma reminds me a lot of hickory smoked beef jerky with a little extra brown sugar and honey on it. Mouthfeel is surprisingly light. Flavor nice sweet light flavor then comes a big meaty smoked flavor and a slight roasted bitter finish. Overall, excellent beer. DrDavid (122), , Vermont, USA Aug 17, 2008 (Bottle). Intense smoked Italian ham aroma. Color a gorgeous dark reddish brown. Flavor a symphony of smoke, malt, and hops, without undo bitterness until the finish when a slight smoky bitterness emerges. Fantastic stuff. MonsterMunch (3), Newbridge, Ireland does not count Aug 12, 2008 My first foray into smoked beer and with pure luck. Extremely flavoursome, distinctive smell of a strong peaty whiskey lwith a flavour like a cross between smoking tobacco and pipe tobacco but without being bitter. Excellent beer, one i will be recommending. Bigmmartin (187), Dayton, Ohio, USA Aug 12, 2008 Bottle. Haven’t tried too many smoked or marzen beers. But this one seems to be pretty high quality. Looks great, with a dark red color and a thick tan head. Aroma is intense, smokey campfire. Nice smoked woody malt flavors. Lots of character, but not my favorite style. I can appreciate it for what it is though.
