Drnk_McDermott (1545), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA Dec 30, 2004 Draft, at the <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/Places/ShowPlace.asp?PlaceID=617>Maple Tree Inn, Blue Island, IL. Had this many times before I started rating, but the experience is well remembered. Gotta say you either like this one or hate it. Somewhat coca-cola colored after pouring, thin lacy head, and the great taste of smoked gouda cheese.
MrChopin (172), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 7, 2008 The bubbly white head is gone a little quickly, but there’s no replacement for that beautiful mahogany color, ruby shimmering under the sepia. The nose is smoke deluxe, like a meat spread from salty bacon to spicy sausage. The flavor is smoky meat as well, but it’s more nuanced with roast malt accents and touches of long-lasting wood. Palate is very delicate and cloudy, a near match for the other components. Wonderful stuff. Now I’ll have to go back and try the Urbock again. michael-pollack (1396), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 4, 2008 500ml Bottle: Nice smoke aroma that smells of a smoke-house, candle-smoke, smoked cheese, ski lodge, and a hint of burning logs. Poured dark amber/medium brown in color with a large, dense, rocky, tan head that shrank but lasted throughout. Clear. Not sparkling. Good lacing. Flavor of smoke, smoke-house, candle-smoke, smoked cheese, ski lodge, and a hint of burning logs. Medium body. Smooth, creamy texture. Soft carbonation. Smoke smoke smoke finish. Even though I am not a big smoked beer fan, the smokiness and the complexity of the flavor in this beer really impressed me. jonsiii (151), Fredericia, Denmark Sep 4, 2008 Bottle 50 cl. Dark brown colour, large bubbly head. Lots of smoke in aroma and taste. Low on carbonation. Easy drinkable. EricE (233), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Sep 2, 2008 Brown pour with a dark red tint. Clear with light tan head. Very smoky, woody aroma with malt. Bitter malt flavor with tons of smoke. At first it reminds you of some good barbecue but after drinking half a glass I felt like I had just smoked half a pack of cigarettes. Maybe this just isn’t my style. jfb (42), Freising, Germany Sep 1, 2008 (bottle) clear, dark ruby-brown colour, wonderful head. aroma is an assortment of heavily smoked dark meats over a herbal hoppy background. the beer is smooth with mild carbonation. a solid malt base and the herbal hop bitterness promote the dominant flavours: smoked meat, grilled sausage and a faint woodiness. a wonderfully smooth, well-balanced beer!
