patrick767 (2016), fort wayne, Indiana, USA May 15, 2009 bottle at Ft Wayne tasting - Pours dark amber with a medium sized tan head. The aroma is pretty much all smoke. The taste is strongly smoked with a little caramel malt. It’s light to medium bodied and well, it’s interesting though personally I prefer my smoked beers to have a noticeable but not quite so dominating smokiness. Anker (305), Hillerød, Denmark May 14, 2009 Bottle.
Pours a ruby colour with a dense tan head.
Aroma is dry smoked salami and ham.
Flavour is lightly smoked ham with a long smoky aftertaste. A little watery on the palate. Ceebs25 (217), Naperville, Illinois, USA May 12, 2009 1 pint .09 fl oz bottle. Really quite appealing aroma and not too overpowering on the smoky side of things, as it obviously hits you right away but doesn’t take over the experience. Some smoked meat and gouda, but not as meaty as I was expecting. A good amount of hickory-oak fire wood, toasted cereal grains, and baked caramels. A small, dense, Styrofoam white head on the pour, and slightly lighter bright sangria color. Even from the first sip, this beer to me is more well-rounded than the ur-bock. Not as much smoky dominance, and a nice balance of full malt and hop flavors. Lighter on the body, yet still rather creamy smooth, with a little more zing in the more bitter finish. Oak and smoky cereal grains and toast are big, with some caramels and and even some light medium fruits. Hops are fairly earthy grass, with little bit of herbalness. Overall, this one definitely hit my good side alot more than the ur-bock. Really a pretty interesting and pretty good beer. NJJereme (261), Saint Petersburg, Florida, USA May 9, 2009 Bottle. Pours a amber-brown color w/ a light off-white head. Smoky woody fragrance becomes apparent immediately. Smoky malty flavor predominates afterwards. Medium bodied. An interesting selection. JK54B (913), Helsinki, Finland May 9, 2009 A 0.5L bottle from Alko shop, Smokey nose. Pale head. Dark coppery colour. Dry smokey taste. Some hoppiness. Nose better than taste. Slightly sour taste. Quite foaming. Elwood (669), Leesburg, Virginia, USA May 5, 2009 1 pt. bottle. Pours a deep, deep amber with a large, creamy, light tan head. The smell of smoked meat (ham?) fills the room. Smoked meat and more smoked meat in the nose. Medium carbonation with a medium-light mouthfeel. Slightly dry. It opens on the palate with a metallic note, then falls into smoky meat, sweet malt, a little ash, and some earth. Lingering smoky, bitter finish. While fun to try, I don’t think I could session this beer. cbkschubert (1945), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA May 4, 2009 Bottle from BevMo (E. Tucson) - Pours a clear brown color with a 3/4 finger thick light tan head that faded pretty quick. Faint spotty lacing. Aroma is smoked malt (bacon). Flavor is lightly sweetened smoked malt. Medium body. Surprisingly, the smokiness doesn’t linger in the aftertaste. A good smoked beer. noompa (130), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 2, 2009 Draft @ Map Room. Maroon colored w/ a robust tan head; tar, soke, woody aroma; smoke dominates flavor; quenching as all-hell. Paired it with smoked sausage and Gouda. Wonderful experience on the whole!
