I was not at all surprised when I tasted this and meat came to mind. Nice smokey but not overpowering. Easily my favorite german brewery. kassner (440), Wexford, Pennsylvania, USA

One of the better ones but still it seems the smoke has been toned down from years past. More malty darl amber with modest head and lacing. The ambiance was OK but the friendliness of the staff was completely lacking PaulHegedus (464), Georgetown, Ontario, Canada
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Apr 16, 2009 Bottle, served cellar temperature. A dark amber hued brew. The aroma is very strong; I could pick it up the moment I opened the bottle. The head is solid, permanent at half an inch. The aroma is full of smoked ham with a caramel backbone, some spices. The mouthfeel is thin to medium in body. The smoke flavour is a huge part of the profile, with some more malt character, a bit of caramel. Personally, I can never finish a bottle of this, though I do pick one up occasionally hoping it will grow on me. It might. I can appreciate the depth of flavour and aroma. Really, I see the strength of this in food pairing, which I would like to experiment with. Smoked cheeses and meats are obvious choices, but I would try aged cheeses, old cheddar perhaps. There is more experimenting left to be done, I think. rabba9 (66), Chaska, Minnesota, USA

Goes down smooth. Usually for beers like this with such intense flavor I wouldn’t have more than one, but this one I could drink a few. I wish I had some smoked meat or cheese to pair this beer with, I bet it would be amazing! bvc (244), Kenmore, Washington, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 8, 2009 500ml bottle capped. Pours a deep dark clear brown with a nice fluffy off white head. Nose is slightly malty sweet and big on smokey bacon and campfire. I have had this one many times and it doesn’t disappoint. It really opens up when it is right around room temp and I could drink a couple of bottles of this without a problem. This is pretty much my benchmark for smoked beers and one of these times I will cook something in this as I am sure it would be amazing. SmallOne (79), Sweden
