alexchafe (29), , Newfoundland, Canada Mar 11, 2009 aroma is a smokey punch in the nose with some subtle herby notes, like a campfire. flavour is bbq smoke, and bacon (to sound like a broken record) with some serious malt and spices (peppers?) lingering in the background. pretty light and smooth on the palate. the perfect touch of bitter on the finish to compliments its spices. The flavour really evolves as you drink this one, your mouth really gets used to the blatant smoke and begins to see the subtleties about halfway through. Nordcore (266), North of, Norway Mar 10, 2009 Updated: Jul 11, 200950 CL Bottle. Apperance; Dark amber. Aroma; Smoke and some tar. Terrible flavor with smoke and tar. I hated it, but still this is one of the beers I remember. I really want to try it again.
New rating jul 2009 in Bamberg Brewpub. Apperance; Black with a nice offwhite head. Aroma; sence of smoke, tar but also some dark fruits. The flavor is again the tar but also quite sweet. Finally tried it again, and I knew I would like it Muggus69 (461), Sydney, Australia Mar 9, 2009 Date: 18/2/09
Beer info: Bottled in brown 500ml bottle 5.1% abv bb 2-2009
Sampling Notes:
Served chilled in goblet.
Pours a deep near-brown bronze body with a dense sort of off-white collar.
Woah, confronting aroma definately. Have to say smokey from the get go with still-burning wood and bacon hitting hard, a malty richness lingers in the background.
Reasonably lean body, moderate carbonation, sticky sort of texture. Burnt astringency dries out body quite a bit, contributing to the overall bitterness.
Decent malt body bringing some caramel, then a smack of smokiness. Wood, charcoal, cured meats, bbq marinade, burnt toast. Finish is reasonably bitter, drying smokiness that lingers for a bit.
Probably not everyones cup of tea, but its deeply complex and has a really meaty smokiness that I find really interesting and appealing. PJClarke (608), London, Greater London, England Mar 8, 2009 Boom! I feel like a kipper. I am smoked out. This is lovely. Intense and dark. Of course it is smokey and all the better for it. So many mental connections with meats like sausages and smoked hams. It has something of a honey glaze about it. Huge sweetness involved. Amazingly interesting and amazingly delicious. Strangebrewer (207), Chatham, Ontario, Canada Mar 7, 2009 bottled. Poured clear dark brown with thin off-white head. Aroma reminds me of smoked salmon. Watery mouthfeel at first, flavour of ash with bitter finish and smoke that lingers. Different for sure, not refreshing at all. I won’t be trying this one again ruggedman (613), Portland, Maine, USA Mar 7, 2009 Bottle - pours a dark brown body with a tannish head. Aroma is smoke, and lots of it! Smells like bacon or a sausage. There’s really no other way to put it. Flavors are malty sweet, and really smokey. They’ve balanced the malt profile here perfectly though with the smoke flavor its just delicious. Dervock (178), Emu plains, Australia Mar 7, 2009 Bottle - As soon as I opened the bottle the smokey aroma hit me, smells like smoked cheese. Nice carbonation but the smoke flavour over powered everything else. May have enjoyed more with some nice smoked ham and cheese - but not on its own. BartC (398), Lichtaart, Belgium Mar 5, 2009 Dark red brown beer with a creamy beige head. Very smoky aroma and taste. Reminds me of BBQ and bacon. Very soft carbonation. Very long remaining aftertaste.
