This is my first smoked and i have to say it’s quite an experience, smells like roast beef or a slim jim and slightly yeasty. The smokiness really stands out in the flavor also you can taste meat straight off the grill that was smoked for hours. Good stuff here.

Bottle, Drank at Braugarten in Sao Paulo. Very smokey, meaty and salmon notes, great to go with cold cuts and BBQs.

Bottled in Zeitgeist (Jolly Gardeners) in Vauxhall. Went here for a German gravity cask beer festival to find that they had sold out the previous day! However, I noticed an old friend sitting in the fridge and rekindled a love affair that began 20 years ago in Bamberg! Michael Jackson wrote that many peaple do not start to like this beer until they have had several litres of it. My first impressions at the brewery tap were not overwhelming. But I percevered, had a few litres, returned the following day and by then was addicted! Most ratings on this site are one-off tastings of bottles. Those who have sat in the Schlenkerla tavern and enjoyed the same beer from the wood in volume, inevitably seem to give higher ratings. No other bottom fermented beer comes close to this with the exeption of its big brother Schlenkerla Urbock. I won’t bother to describe it, there are hundreds of good accounts already. Just look for the raters who have obviously drunk enough to fall in love (like me) and they will be the most accurate accounts of this amazing beer!

Pours muddy brown with oatmeal colored head. The nose is as the flavor, which is smokey bacon and jerky. Vegetarians stay clear of this one!

500ml from Total Wine, Durham. When you’re in the mood for a rauchbier (or as my wife calls it, a "meat beer") I’m not sure you can do much better than dial up this classic. Pours like a substantial brown ale, clear, impressively colored, with a fairly minimal head. But the aroma is just ka-pow! Deep in the pit, with the hog on the spit. It’s not meat beer in the abstract, but lovely wood smoked bbq. What’s nice is the high quality of the marzen at the heart of it all, with some hops battling through the strong smoked malts, and a very rich creamy body (much fuller than I remember). A delight.

Bottle, courtesy of robinvboyer. Pours a deep brown color which when held up to light is quite translucent and deep reddish, reminds me of coke. Next to no head. Smells like bacon and jerky. Flavour isn’t quite what the smell is like. It’s rather malty and smooth at the beginning, and as you drink it gets progressively more smoky and meaty. Carbonation is low, but nice, and it’s very smooth and slightly creamy. Very interesting beer.

Pours a dark brown reddish rusty color. Aroma is smoked spiced sausage and campfire. Very robust flavor of grilled sausage or pork. The roasted malts really supports the smoky flavors. Very creamy and a nice medum-full body. Not quite as good as the Urbock, but definitely close to it.
