| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 12, 2007 From a 500mL Bottle. Pours a transparent, dark ruddy brown color with a thick layer of creamy toasted marshmellow head. Clean smoked malt aroma with notes of caramel and hearty maple syrup glazed bread crusts. Very malt forward, with no esters or hop characters to speak of, allowing the maltiness to shine through. Medium light bodied, softly carbonated mouthfeel. Lots of smoke, but clean and bready, without any excessive salty or bacon characters. An underlying malt layer of toasted cashew nuts provides some additional malt presence, who’s flavors are enhanced by a slightly slick mouthfeel. Dries out quenchingly at the end, leaving a smokey/spicy herbal residue behind to lift any residual sugars off the tongue. Exceptionally clean, flavorful, and refreshing. Perfect beer to pair with barbeque. Awesome. scotty (830), Scotland

An Olaf Schellenberg beer, but had it since then. What can I say that hasn’t already been said....nothing! Must rank as one of the most distinctive beers there is, rich and well....smoky! scanovajr (361), Stanford, California, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 10, 2007 Updated: Nov 18, 2007Pours a dark brown color with a white head that dissipated quickly. Smoky aroma (surprised?). Tasted like sausage as one kid said. Another person said it tasted like slim jims. Either way, I don’t think I ever had a beer quite like this bad boy right here. Everyone should have it. Also it was pretty cheap at the store we got it... only 4 bucks for a bottle. beerbill (1938), Laurel, New York, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 10, 2007 25 oz. bottle. Pours a clear dark brown with red highlights when held to a light. Moderate linen-white head that faded to a thick, creamy film and left partial lacing on the glass. The aroma is very nice with a strong but mellow fragrance of smoke along with a bit of earthiness. The flavor was equally pleasant with the smoke taking center stage, but not overpowering and not excessively sharp. There is also some malt flavor that comes through. Surprisingly smooth. Well done. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 9, 2007 25 oz bottle from The Lighthouse in Manchester. Dark brown-red translucent body with a good half inch of off-white head. Smells malty, peaty, and smokey. Tastes malty at first, but quickly goes to peaty and ashy... For the style, this is spot-on, and I suspect it’d pair greatly with a smoked Gouda or pork sausage. As it is, it’s a bit overwhelming by itself for my taste. Nevertheless, nearly flawless and well-crafted for sure. It is what it is...
