25 oz bottle from The Lighthouse in Manchester. Dark brown-red translucent body with a good half inch of off-white head. Smells malty, peaty, and smokey. Tastes malty at first, but quickly goes to peaty and ashy... For the style, this is spot-on, and I suspect it’d pair greatly with a smoked Gouda or pork sausage. As it is, it’s a bit overwhelming by itself for my taste. Nevertheless, nearly flawless and well-crafted for sure. It is what it is...

On tap at Map Room, Chicago. Obviously you have to like smoke flavor to appreciate this beer. This is basically a smoke lager, as compared to the Ur-Bock, which has a smoky bacon flavor. I liked the Ur-Bock’s complexity over this beer, but it’s smooth with a low bitterness.

Bottle and from barrel at brewery. I tend to prefer the Urbock but this is the classic benchmark rauchbier and I’ll wait to have several pints of Urbock from the wood to make a final decision which is my real favorite. Pours deep brown with a big, fluffy, lasting and aromatic head. Pure smoked malt aromas, flavors. The body is designed for quaffability. In-your-face smokiness yet balanced with a slight bit of sweet. Just lovely.

Nice brown-amber clear colour, with a beige head. Aroma is obv of smoked ham (sud-tiroler speck) or smoked cheese, with some maltiness, such as baked slightly burnt bread. Some hints of mocha and toffee. Lovely in mouth, very smooth, with a little acidity. Flavourful but still quenching.

Clear dark amber body is a small beige head. Aroma is sweet hickory and mesquite smoke with caramels and toffee. The flavor is moderately sweet with plenty of smoke, jerky, toffee and dark pitted fruits. Medium body is a bit thin from filtering with gentle carbonation.

10/24/07 From the bottle. Aroma is like smoked cheese with subdued sweet malt and a strong salty tone. Appearance is clear medium brown with a low light tan head. Flavor is smooth, but still like grainy sausage. The malt comes through with a sour/smoke blend followed by a roasted vienna or munich flavor. Mouthfeel is pretty much identical to a standard Marzen, with medium body and carb feel. Overall, this is clearly exemplary of the style and should be tried by anyone curious about smoked beers.

Bottled 500ml. Amazing Beer. Brown color with a generous beige head, smoked aroma (remember a xmas turkey) and the same thing to the flavor but too more stronger. Mouthfeel is dry and bitter finish.

Português : Cerveja maravilhosa!! Cor marrom com uma generosa espuma bege, aroma defumado (me lembrou o peru de natal) o mesmo para o sabor, porém mias forte. Retrogosto seco com um final amargo.

Holy liquid smoke Batman. This is a potent smoked beer. Small head. Watery texture, strong malt, and a dry smoked finish that lasts into the morning. Pretty good at being different. Urbock is next.
