Braincage1 (137), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jul 25, 2007 Bottle. This beer is a deep ruby red with the thinnest beige head. The aroma is a bit strange to me - this smell of smoked, salted meat dominates everything and if it were stronger it would be almost like canned anchovies. It is so strong that it takes away from the flavor which is much better because it isn’t as sharp as the aroma - less salty. Actually very pleasant at this level. It is good to try out but that aroma is gonna keep me away from now on. Otherwise very quenching and easy hophead75 (1945), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Jul 25, 2007 Deep amber in color with some orange highlights. Aroma: Alot of smoke, charred wood, smoked meats- pork, and some sweet caramel in the back as well as light notes of fruit. Taste is very smoky, with smoked ribs/sausage, wood, with some caramel malty sweetness and fruit. Finishes smoky and smooth. Bullit (1300), Glasgow, Scotland Jul 21, 2007 Dark red colour, small beige head. Aroma of smoked eel and oak wood. Strong flavours of smoked fish as well, going into hoppy and dark malt flavours. Heavy but tasteful. nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jul 19, 2007 Updated: Jul 10, 2009500 mL. Dark mahogany with red highlights and small but lasting head. Aroma is peppery smoke with some sweet barbecue sauce on a rib hiding underneath. Flavor is initially smoke, smoke and more smoke: but after a few sips the malt comes out from behind the cloud and the barbecue fun really begins. The herby-bitter hops show up a little later to turn the glass towards a balancing act of herbal spices, smooth and earth-rich molasses, jerky, and of course the overarching heart-of-wood smoke. Palate is surprisingly smooth and not quite medium-bodied. Give this one at least half of a (glass) chance and I think you will be pleasantly surprised, even if you don’t like rauchbier. Mamma mia che serata! :) krysztofar (344), belleville, Illinois, USA Jul 15, 2007 16.9 this is a very clean looking ruby brown lager. a moderate amount of foamy white head rises then sinks to a light whispy cap. nose is sweet malt, smoke and campfire. you know that bonfire/kegger you get on your hoodie. very different, this beer tastes like a liquid bar-b-que. as you drink it, however, the smoke flavor’s intensity seems to fade and more sweet dark malts and some light hops come into play. i also like the tobacco description another rater had mentioned. chimpscampee (556), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Jul 14, 2007 Super smoky, burn bacon/brat, hicory barbecue sauce, marzen wheat. Unique. Hint of tobacco. goozen (1061), Leiden, Netherlands Jul 14, 2007 Tap at Schlenkerla, Bamberg 0,5ltr: Must not bad at all from draught, only know its bottled version and that one i didn’t like at all.
