BeerChaser0078 (284), Melbourne, Australia Sep 2, 2009 Bottle. Poured a dark coppery brown with a fluffy tan head and lotsa lacing. Nose is smoky and malty and has a distinctive smell of smoked bacon. This is the first rauchbier I have tried so I wasn’t too sure what to expect and while I was surprised by the aroma it was a pleasant surprise. Flavour is still smoky but not so meaty, malt blends harmoniously with notes of caramel, tobacco and spice. The smokiness is just about perfect, present but not overpowering. A really good beer, I have just been converted. Oscbert (531), Sacramento, California, USA Aug 28, 2009 Aaaah rating 500.. Here goes...
~Pours a dark brown with creamy tan head. Nice lacing
~Scent of smoked ham and malts, and woodsy tobacco.
~Smoked malty wood flavor. Malts are toasty. Malts and smoke compliment each other. Neither is very aggressive. Light hops.
~Light bodied, very smooth. Smokey sweet malt finish.
~This is a damn good brew. Wasn’t real sure what to expect. It could stand to be a bit thicker. I bet this is excellent straight from the cask. I love the smoked malt and wood flavor. I wish it had a bit more ooompf, but then it might be overkill. Excellent brew. Glad It is easy to find around here. Right on the mark for its style. This is a mans brew that should be eaten with red meat!
jimmack34 (560), Lancaster, Ohio, USA Aug 23, 2009 1pt 0.9oz bottle. Pours nice brown color with a very soft foamy head that lasts forever. Smells of camfired cooked bacon. Tastes of smoked pork, corn malt, hardwood, and hops. Nice lacing. Nice long aftertaste. Excellent brew. jkwalking05 (1483), Arlington, Texas, USA Aug 22, 2009 Deep brown with a decent sized beige head. Aroma is of smoked meat, wood, malt and earth. Taste is of firewood, smoke and ash. tagg (5), Bagsværd, Denmark does not count Aug 22, 2009 Pours red-brown with nice head, which disappears quickly. Marked smell of campfire. Smokey flavor, meaty, malty. I like it. Stefano (1321), Esbjerg, Denmark Aug 17, 2009 Dark reddish brown with a foamy white head. Aroma is very smoked. Flavor is dominated of smoke, roasted malt and hops. Good balance of the malt and smoke in the finish.
drowland (1360), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Aug 12, 2009 A must try. As for the age-old saying "smells like a campfire and tastes like bacon," this is pretty dead on. The marzen aspect gives it a nice sweet malty quality too and overall it kind of reminds me of smoked ribs/pork. Yummy! beethoven82 (6), Turku, Finland does not count Aug 7, 2009 This is the second Rauchbier I’ve tasted, and the first one was NOTHING compared to this one! At first, when opening the bottle, even my wife standing a few feet from me, could sense the smell of SMOKE, SMOKE, and SMOKED bacon, meat, and wood... The aroma is just OUT of this WORLD! I’m close to the end of this pint, and I am still completely LYRICAL about the aroma... The Appearance is nice, (my bottle had too much of a head) In the glass it looks really nice, a dark copper... The flavor is smokey smokey smokey... Very nice! If you like pepperoni sausage, or smoked salami... As others have stated, VERY MEATY - nearly leaves a taste of smoked sausage in your mouth! Palate is surprisingly thin for a beer with such an amazing amount of flavor, but nice, this palate proves the beer’s origin as a "smoked lager" - not necessarily a bad thing! My overall impression is: WOW! If you like smoked sausages, or cigars... Taste this!
