minch25 (346), Columbus, Ohio, USA Feb 10, 2007 Updated: Mar 5, 2007Dark reddish brown body, uneven porous head. Strong aroma of smoke. Even stronger smoke flavor commands the stage with the hops and base lager working the lights and curtain. Such a well-structured beer. Full-bodied and completely robust. Threatens to overwhelm but never does (though a second bottle very well might). Overall very balanced beer and very smooth. Incredibly drinkable. Each time I try this I’m more impressed. A beer like this really grabs your attention and wakes you up, with every gulp pleading for another. chicagobears (336), Elk Grove Village, Illinois, USA Feb 9, 2007 Pours a reddish bronze a creamy head. Overpowering smoked cheese aroma. The taste is even more smoky than the aroma. This reminds me of when I used to smoke Marlboro. Once I got past the initial shock of the powerful smoke taste I could detect a pretty good tasting brew. However the smoke is just to much for me to overcome. I’m glad I tried this but I don’t plan to have one again. crushinat0r (227), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Feb 6, 2007 Very smoky ribs and bacon scent, very unique, makes me hungry! Dark brown with a touch of red in colour, light head. Slightly metallic, smoky hickory sticks in taste. Again, very unique, and very good. joebrew (608), Farewell Minny; Hello Puyallup, Washington, USA Feb 5, 2007 Pours a dark brown with a long lasting dirty tannish head. Slight sweet malt present, but masked by a decent smoke profile. The flavor is definately smokey, but more of a bbq smoke, and balanced nicely with a hint of sweet. Crafty07 (391), Florence, Kentucky, USA Feb 5, 2007 My first experiance with a ’smoke beer’. They’re not kidding! Tastes like someone poured liquid smoke into the bottle. Overpowering at first but very pleasent to drink. I can’t imagine drinking more than one of these at a time. And eating bar-b-que or smoked sausage WITH this? Overkill. BitchesBrew (710), Berkeley, California, USA Feb 4, 2007 Updated: Mar 28, 2007[bottle] Dark, murky brown appearance with a very small layer of foam on top. Nice campfire aroma, with some mild sweetness present. Initially, the flavors are quite malty, then the smoke sets in, domination almost all the flavors within the beer. This beer is pretty unique- not really an everyday drinking kind of brew, but when consumed with a huge plate of BBQ meat (as I enjoyed it), or while sitting around a campfire, this beer is excellent. DirtyMartini (194), Los Angeles, Alabama, USA Feb 4, 2007 Updated: Feb 7, 2007i dont get it. all this smoke is just overpowering. i feel like im drinking BBQ sauce. either that, or a liquified version of smoked sausages. i think this would be a great beer to cook with or use as a marinade....but to drink. not so much. i have heard from a brewmaster friend of mine that the bottled version we get here is crap and the fresh version in germany is fantastic...so i guess until i try it there the rating remains as it is. ARMed (485), Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 2, 2007 My favorate of all the Schlenkerla beers I have had. This was an excellent smoked beer with a smooth taste and wonderful appeal. The smokey flavor was evident but not over abundant. Fluffy beigh head with small frothy bubbles covers this dark brownish bock beer. Rich and creamy flavor with a malty undertone. Not overly sweet. Excellent palate with a great finish. I really loved this beer.
