| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 20, 2004 Pours a brown color with a thin head that quickly walks away. Smoky aroma and taste, obviously. I would label this the heaviest of the three. It seems to have some more malt and body to it. gunnfryd (3592), Kristiansand, Norway

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 13, 2004 Updated: May 17, 20072003 bottle. Good ruddy, red-brown pour with some lighter oranges as well. Big creamy light-mocha colored head that sticks on top for most of the beer. Lots of lacing. Smells of sweet malt, slight smoked woodiness. No sediment of any sort and mostly clear, or I would have given it a 5 for appearance. Taste starts out with a semi-sweet, ultra balanced marzen flavor; light honey, good nutty hops, caramel malt. The smokiness comes on in the middle and slowly builds into a wonderful finish of smoke, smoke and more smoke. Like smoking a nice cuban while eating a bacon, and smoked gouda sandwich on brown bread (ok no one actually does that, but you get the point). Smoke is not subtle, but I did enjoy the fact that the flavors were layered and the marzen flavor was there at the start. Medium body, didnt get any thinning. Light carbonation, good stuff. gnoff (3570), Göteborg, Sweden

February 17, 2006. Dark red color and a white head. Very smokey, petey scent, lots of tar, smoked reindeer meat. Taste is very similar to the scent, lots of smoke. Perfect for rounding off an evening or with grilled food. 7/5/7/3/15=3.7
Had this so many times, but at last a rerate (Bottle from Systembolaget) On August 9, 2008 Dark red color, white head. Smoke, sausage, reindeer meat scent. Taste goes around the same way, even more smoked sausage. Medium mouthfeel, medium to low bitterness. An aquired taste most likely, but sign me up for aquired then! 8/4/8/3/16=3.9 Dickinsonbeer (3494), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA

Now I try it again and the aroma is dominated by smoke with only hints of malt. Very unique and drinkable. Nice dark amber color with slight head that fades fast. Good mouthfeel and relatively easy to drink as long as you can get past the initial smoke flavor. CapFlu (3483), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

Quick dissipating white head and a beautiful mahogany-brown body. Scent of beef jerky. Smooth, smoked malt flavour. Medicinal to my sore throat. Hickory flavour. Mmmm. So smooth... Don’t bring a beer to your barbeque - bring a barbeque to your beer. Smoky in the extreme, but beautifully so, not to offend. Marzen base is a little thin compared to their urbock, but big enough to give the beer a full body.
Rerate for draught: +1 to palate - fuller bodied.
