I tend to prefer the Urbock but this is the classic benchmark rauchbier and I’ll wait to have several pints of Urbock from the wood to make a final decision which is my real favorite. Pours deep brown with a big, fluffy, lasting and aromatic head. Pure smoked malt aromas, flavors. The body is designed for quaffability. In-your-face smokiness yet balanced with a slight bit of sweet. Just lovely. DruncanVeasey (2753), The Penguin’s Arms, Europe, Warwickshire, England

A bit smoky. Soft and creamy m/f. Delicious. (original rate- 3.6) Bottled, Piper’s End Beer Festival. Startlingly smoky, Viking Jorvik Centre nose, according to some of my samplers. This is really wrinkling a few nostrils. An ancient, waxy, bootpolishy, but above all, beechwoody smokiness. A definite hint of museum. Considering the nose, pours with a surprisingly clear red transparency. Still, flattish mouthfeel. Smoky but creamy, like Austian smoked cheese. Can’t help but think of smoked hams and Bratwurst. Massively evocative nose. The smokiness in the flavour is only marginally more assertive than in Black Cat or Cain’s Dark Mild. Got to try this with food next time. Completely unique, and wonderfully offensive to outsiders. harlequinn (2745), Tacoma, Washington, USA

Aroma is very smoked and salty. The flavor is nicely smoked and not over the top and slightly peppery. This one would go really well with food, sausages, bangers and mash, etc...Nicely malty with hops in the aftertaste. Very enjoyable. Suttree (2740), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

Flavors is smokey, as one might expect, but also nice notes of caramel and molasses to balance it out. Crisp, clean palate. Even some hints of coffee as it warms. Thanks, Santa! Good head retention with deep amber color. Fun to sip, to get that chewy smokiness that makes you want to eat it or dinner. Poured dark amber/medium brown in color with a large, dense, rocky, tan head that shrank but lasted throughout. Clear. Not sparkling. Good lacing. Flavor of smoke, smoke-house, candle-smoke, smoked cheese, ski lodge, and a hint of burning logs. Medium body. Smooth, creamy texture. Soft carbonation. Smoke smoke smoke finish. Even though I am not a big smoked beer fan, the smokiness and the complexity of the flavor in this beer really impressed me. IrishBoy (2719), Bakersfield, California, USA
