You should not put this in your stein and be able to enjoy this as a session. Very dark for a Marzen. The smoke aroma overpowers any malt aroma. The smoke salami flavor overpowers any you try to eat or drink for the next few days!!! Very unique beverage. Drew (2410), Kent, Ohio, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 18, 2002 Deep amber, small head. The lace was not sheets, it was curtains! The taste was initially thin, then suddenly full and thick. Smokey roasty malts, very long lasting smoky finish. I’m still not sure if I really like this, but it’s easier to handle than the Urbock. Pours a clear dark amber color with a medium large creamy head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of strong smoke and peat as well as earthy notes and caramel. Taste is dry smoked wood and peat, caramel and a lightly hoppy finish. Smooth, medium bodied. eaglefan538 (2397), Wilmington, Delaware, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 5, 2006 A very nice rauchbier, this one was great from the pour onward. The poure was dark brown with a great pillowy head that really laced quite nicely. The aroma was of deep smoked hickory wood (the char from a fire) and exceeded my prior single rauchbier experience. Flavor was strong and deep malts. This beer was super rich in both malty character and smokiness. Good stuff. Vac (2394), San Diego, California, USA
| 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 2/10 | 2/5 | 8/20 | Nov 2, 2002 I guess smoked beer just isn’t the beer for me. It smelled and tasted like a spiced smoked meat, which I will eat on occassion, however the flavor just isn’t what I want in a beer. I think I’ll be staying away from smoked beers as much as possible. aracauna (2391), Georgia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 10, 2003 I had the rauchbier weizen and was less than impressed. The smoke seemed stale and overpowered the rest of the beer. Here however, the smoke seemed to complement the beer more. I was reminded of grilled meat (of course not with a gas grill, those wastes of grills) and campfires. I could see this going well with a nice grilled steak or some fat grilled hamburgers, but I'm not so sure I could handle a lot of it. Boutip (2385), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 15, 2004 Bottle – Poured an amber cleared type brew with a nice head. Aroma of smoke is extremely present, a bit too much for my liking. Taste is overpowered by smoke, almost like drinking a beer in a salmon smoker. This is not bad beer just very different from what I’m used to drinking on a regular basis. This beer would be wonderful if it was accompanied by some sausages or even smoked salmon.
