Aroma is smoked ham, bacon. and salami. Appearance is dark brown bordering on black. Flavor is of dark malt and a variety of smoked meat. A cookout or a meat lover's pizza in a bottle. I can see people being weirded out by this experience but I think its an excellent beer even better than Stone's Smoked Porter. DanielBrown (1919), Birmingham (via Leicester), West Midlands, England

This is so special it really should be my 200th beer, but hey ho! that's the way it goes. Big charcoal aroma. Dark chestnut colour, with a quickly receding head, which leaves a patchy residue on top, and spidery lacing. Huge initial meat flavour, but with the odd speck of sugar. Malt and watery taste at the end, once the bar-b-q flavour has subsided some. This is like a meal - I wouldn't be able to drink much of it in a single session, but it is a delicious speciality, and still surpisingly crisp, due to it's thinnish mouthfeel. Nice lingering taste too. Kevin (1918), Colorado, USA

Smoked meats, cedar chips over power some malts in the the aroma. Taste is initially smoked meats, caramel maliness that cuts into the smoke factor & leave a nice pleasnt lighter smoke flavor on your palate. Nice beer Joeh (1908), Buckinghamshire, England
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Oct 9, 2002 Updated: Jul 5, 2004Original rating: 9th October 2002. Bottled - Some brought me it back from Germany. Dark brown, the large head diminishes quickly. Very smoky aroma. The smoky flavour masks all else - I didn’t think I’d like it, but I did. (3.5/5)
Rerate: 6th July 2004. I much prefer this than I did before. The smokey flavour isn’t sickly, and adds to the entire beer. Oddly refreshing and thirst quenching. (4.3/5). I will put in a total of 4.3 as my tastes have changed, not the beer.

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Feb 22, 2006 Bottle pours a bright, deep-mahogany with a creamy, ecru head that holds and laces. While this beer conjures the same aromas as the <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/aecht-schlenkerl I tried recently ("smoked sausage or ham, charcoal, campfire"), the flavor and palate are more savory and refined. I find no chemical slant but instead I stumble across dark fruit in the flavor. The aftertaste is at once smoke and roasted malt, and a buttery note to the palate makes the meatiness of the beer simply mouthwatering. By far the best Rauchbier I’ve tried.
