Pours a light brown color with a small light tan head. That patented Schlenkerla big smoky bacon aroma is quite massive in the nose. I always find it tough to pull out other notes in smoke beers because thats really all I get. The taste is quite smoky as well, but big on the rich maltiness as well. Almost leaves a roasty flavor in the aftertaste. The finish was sharp and crisp with a campfire smokiness feeling to it. This has some decent balance to it. Nice smoked beer. These guys know what they’re doing.

16.9oz bottle. My third of the Schlenkerlas I bought a couple months back. Pours a clear brown with a red tinge with a medium-large frothy khaki head. Head stayed throughout, and the lacing was so thick there was just one big lace in my glass. The first aroma I pick up on is of course smoked malts (think campfire), a little metal, and pepper. Not quite as smoky in the flavor, though it is dominant. Some roasty malts in there as well. A little bit of a slight bitter, chalky finish with some charcoal ash. Could have a little more carbonation, but a solid beer nonetheless.

Draft, at the <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/Places/ShowPlace.asp? Tree Inn, Blue Island, IL. Had this many times before I started rating, but the experience is well remembered. Gotta say you either like this one or hate it. Somewhat coca-cola colored after pouring, thin lacy head, and the great taste of smoked gouda cheese.

The bottle looks good, the beer in the glass also. Smells very much like smoked bacon. Tastes the same. Very spicy, roast-malty, dry finish. Not my favourite!

Great rauch. Aroma was near perfect. Strong smoke with not much else. Pour was a nice deep burnt amber with a thin off white ring for a head. Taste was delicious. Sweet malt with the smoke kicking in midway down the throat. After the smoke exits the nostrils there is a sweet malty aftertaste that just doesn’t belong. Average carbonation. Wish the smoke was more up front than just the aftertaste, but all in all a great smoked. Trying the urbock next!

Pours a deep brown with small white head. Sharp aroma of smoke. Hrm, flavor of smoked fish. Yeah, this is the first smoked I've had, and I'm not too impressed. I guess if you don't like smoked food, stay away from smoked beers.

500mL Bottle. Rich clear orange brown pour, with ultra-clean head of off-white. Distant campfire and wood stove smoke aroma; musky. Good dense malt blast. Some hickory tinged barbeque as well. Flavor pretty much continues the aroma, with more savory pig fat smoked flavor, developing at the back end. Sweetened with brown sugar. Interesting. Drinkable, but fairly static and smoke overwhelmed. Revisit. 3.9.2008. Much more balanced and delicate than I remember. Dry and focus on some barbeque sugars. Malt comes through a little. Lager softness. Not really all that overwhelmed. At this point in my career, I could handle more smoke. A damn good beer.

Clear mahogany with a khaki head. Huge, strong smell of smoked meat, cheese, pepperoni. Light/medium body. Big smoked meat/pepperoni/black pepper/jerky spice flavors with a hint of lightly sweet pale malt in the finish. Now, if we only had some smoked peppers in here....A liquid Philly Cheese sandwich. Love it
