The aroma was heavy with malt and hickory-like, bacon smoke. Slightly sweet and lightly floral underneath all other aromas. A beautiful, clear, sparkling dark ruby/copper hue. Frothy, medium-sized khaki head with decent lacing. This Märzen is fairly malty (not overly so), moderately bitter and lightly salty and acidic. It’s full-bodied with lively carbonation and an oily mouthfeel. The long, very dry finish includes a not-unpleasant tangy/bitter palate. A great beer for either sipping or drinking mass quantities. duff (5475), Surrey, Greater London, England

Smooth, thick and warming body finishes roasty and woody. A very nice rauchbier.
9/18/2002: Pours a rich dark brown with tan head. Upon pouring, smoke fills the room. This style takes some getting used to, but by the end of the bottle, you only want more. This beer would be even better if I could enjoy it with some sort of processed meat. Wait, I just remembered I have some Johnsonville Stadium-Style Brats in the fridge. MMMMmmmm. I microwaved them, but while drinking this beer I could've sworn they were grilled. Nice balance of sweet malt with the smoke flavor. Better mixture of flavors than the Aecht Schlenkerla Weiss. This is a very respectable brew and a must try. Bov (5445), Bienne, Switzerland

| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jan 12, 2003 Superbly smoked nose; like rind of cured ham.Deep black-brown beer with fiery, reddish shine. Smoked taste as from smoked ham again, but also tobacco notes. mouthfeel nor cloying, nor meaty, yet marvellously chewy palate, (ful)filling. Only negative note - hence the lower overall rating - is the drinkability; one’s enough!
