Lots of liqurish and of cause smoke, but no sweet flavors like a scottish ale. Same with the taste; very straight forward. Saarlander (1578), Rancho Cucamonga, California, USA

I enjoyed this beer. TheBeerOrg (1577), Kentucky, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Dec 16, 2007 Pours dark brown with amber hues and mostly receding light tan head. Aroma of smoked wood, oak, charcoal and campire. Taste is smokey, meats, sausage, and brown malt. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation. I enjoy this, but I still have trouble seeing the appeal of a smoked beer where smoke is the dominant characteristic of the beer. JonMoore (1561), Loughborough, Leicestershire, England
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 15, 2005 Bottle. Clear, deep ruby red/dark brown. Smokey bacon aroma. Smokey, meaty flavour. Medium to full bodied, nice mouthfeel. I like this so much, I’m almost stunned (in the ’I was expecting to find it appalling, after my last go of a smoked beer 10 years ago’ sense). obxdude10 (1557), Pottstown, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 27, 2003 Dark brownish color, decent tan head, medium bodied, very smoked aroma, smelled like someone set the glass on fire, this was my first real rauchbier, the aftertaste tasted almost exactly like a Slim Jim, lots of smokiness in the flavors but especially the aftertaste

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 26, 2008 pours mahogany with an off white head that fades to a film and leaves a nice lace trail. smells slightly like real lebanon bologna, malt and brown sugar. the flavor is similar along with some tartness like sour cream, ashiness and low sweetness. hard to really taste any nuances through the smokiness. the finish is acrid and the smoke lingers on until the next morning. medium bodied with a creamy texture from the carbonation. very food friendly... Arome fumé, mais pas plus que ça. Goût fumé faible. Elle n’est pas mauvaise, mais ordinaire. esjaygee (1519), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 20, 2008 Amber with a thin off-white head. Aroma of smoked meats with some malts mixed in. Taste of overpowering smoke with a dry mild hoppy finish. It’s okay, not sure I’d want to have that much of it. I know they put the words "marzen" on the label, but with the overpowering smoke this could have been anything. Perhaps MillerCoors or A-B could smoke one of their lagers and make it semi-drinkable.
