Earthy smoke notes, like a campfire. Nice sticky head. Great mouthfeel, earthy smokiness, wood, dirt, campire. A great brew with smoked foods. A classic beer that everyone should have to try. Smokey malt aroma, smokey sour malt flavor. The finish? Smokey. I hate to call this a one-note beer, because it was obviously made with skill and talent, but the smoke overpowers everything to me. That’s okay, though. It is what it is and it’s tasty ... if you like smoke. Nice for the novelty, but definitely not my style. Tastes like a house fire smells. Man, this reminded me of smoked ham in the aroma and flavor so much that that is all I could get out of it. I imagine it would be great for cooking or marinating. Light body and of course smoke aftertaste. No mistaking this one as a smoked. troyc (1175), Lubbock, Texas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 29, 2006 (0.5L Bottle) Pours dark brown. Aroma of smoke. Taste is pretty much the same, with some dough flavoring as well. It’s a great beer to eat with food, but I could only drink one or two alone. It’s not one of my favorites, but is definitely worth drinking once in a while. glkaiser (1172), Seattle, Washington, USA

Small head that goes away quickly...smokey meat is the aroma and is pretty nice, but a bit sour. Very nice smoke taste, and the beer remains refreshing. I’m drinking this while bbq’ing...perfect. Hops come through at the end, but aren’t overly bitter. Just a nice balance. carruthm (1171), Seattle, Washington, USA

Probably wouldn’t want to have more than 1L of this at any one time because the flavor is a bit strong, but I felt it a great sitting beer. Tranquillity (1167), Espoo, Finland

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Aug 28, 2006 (500 ml bottle from Belfast Co-op) Slightly cloudy tea-ish brown body with a tall tan head that quickly recedes to about 1/2". Aroma dominated by sweet smoked meat, maybe some caramel if you really dig. Mouthfeel smooth, lightly prickly, a bit dry. Sloppy, spotty lacing. Flavor is highly smoke-driven, hard to pick out much underneath. Sweet smoked meat with a malt backbone buried in there is about best I can describe. Finishes somewhat bitter, and aftertaste is more bitter than smokey. Texture and taste-wise, I enjoyed the Urbock and Lagerbier more than this.
