Meanwhile pouring, a nice, stiff, beige-coloured, head grows, which remains long.
Colour’s deep brown/mahogany, bubbleing is low-key.
The smell is smoky, mixed with some malty sweetness.
Taste is mild, the flavour is smoky, special, its body is pretty good, too.
Finish is light hoppy, dry and remains long.
A real special one, liked it! shorlin (373), St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada

Dark dark brown. Nice looking carb, which mellows out fairly quickly, but still sticks around. <sniffs>Oh that is so cool. A real malty nose, but with some very restrained smokiness. This is my first rauchbier, and I am not sure I <i>really</I> expected it to be smoky. The taste is great malt, with a very mild smokiness. Smoke is kind of sweet and amazing. Palate is fine, but I think I need to remember that this is not a big porter, no matter how flavourful. Sidenote: my wife loved this, and her fave beer is still Coor’s Light. duff (5475), Surrey, Greater London, England

Different, well-balanced and tasty. hilladen99 (25), Lake Oswego, Oregon, USA

Just returned from bamberg this beer is fantastic. Even better from oak casks. Low carbonation but still refreshing and smoked at the same time. Incrediblely intense and complex.
The smoke is well balanced and not too overwhelming. Very nice. I tried this together with big onions filled with meat in a Rauchbier Marzen sauce. Incredible. It should be compulsory for any school class in Germany to wisit the unique brew pub. NDmullet (208), South Bend, Indiana, USA

Like really, good, brown sugar cured, smoked pork or something. It only took me one sip to get beyond the smoky surface and into the remarkable characteristics underneath. I like the smokiness, and I love the quality of this beer despite its quirks (it seems many people just can’t get past the smoke). Next time I have this it will be with pancakes. bubslang (438), Kentwood, Michigan, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Feb 22, 2003 wonderful smoky aroma, reminding me of a bbq pit. dark reddish brown color with virtually no head. smoky tasting but not overwhelmingly so, as the underlying malt and hop character complement it well. Was a bit apprehensive to try this beer, as I didn't think it would be my thing. How wrong I was, a wonderful beer, that I will be revisting soon.
