Jan 28, 2006 Schlenkerla Rauchbier pours to a beautiful, bright, deep mahogany color with a thick tan head and a good bit of carbonation. The nose is pungent with waves of salty, and smoky malt aromas. The palate is firm with lots of big flavors of smoke, salt, and bacon. Schlenkerla finishes with more of those intense salty and smoky flavors, then ends with a dry and sooty finish that lingers on the tongue.
A phenomenal rauchbier, and a classic example of the style. As with the Spezial, the aromas and flavors are just so much fresher and brighter than the bottled and exported draught versions we get in the US. You can’t go wrong with any version of this beer, but to enjoy half liter after half liter of this beer in the Altstadt, and in Bamberg, is really something special for a beer lover. As much as I love this one, it is not for everyone. Some beer drinkers just can’t get past the smoke in this beer, and find the aromas and flavors just too much. But for those who love this style, Schlenkerla is as world class, as a beer can get. This one works extremely well with hearty German fare, and is a wonderful beer to just drink and enjoy.

Oct 28, 2007 Updated: May 16, 2009500 ml bottle in pint glass. Clear amber with lasting ring and lace. Smoky, malty, earthy aroma. Smoky caramel flavor with grassy finishing bitterness. Medium body and medium low carbonation. Hard to describe but definitely an absolute favorite.
Bumped to a 5 at the suggestion of Rciesla. Why not? It’s my favorite beer.

Dec 9, 2009 Rich dark beer that smells and tastes of smoked bacon...there is no greater combination of flavors on this planet than bacon and a fine beer. This is the absolute pinnacle of human achievement.

Sep 30, 2009 The best beer i have ever taste. My favorite beer of all time.500 ml bottle. Taste is of dark malts smoked flavors, and ends again with bacon.

Jun 13, 2007 A truly unique beer. Has a wonderful smokey aroma, texture and taste. It goes down bitter, but has a wonderful aftertaste.

Nov 2, 2007 Updated: Jun 21, 2009Bottle and from barrel at brewery. I tend to prefer the Urbock but this is the classic benchmark rauchbier and I’ll wait to have several pints of Urbock from the wood to make a final decision which is my real favorite. Pours deep brown with a big, fluffy, lasting and aromatic head. Pure smoked malt aromas, flavors. The body is designed for quaffability. In-your-face smokiness yet balanced with a slight bit of sweet. Just lovely.
