Goes great with roasted or cured meats and nuts. At first you think the smoke is going to be overwhelming but it always seems to be in the background adding to the complexity of the beer. Very well made and very consistant. Something I would think in this style of beer to be very difficult. Though widely available locally a rare beer. Would like to see this in a cork enclosed 750ml for aging.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 20, 2008 This dark brown ale poured with a thin beige head, eliciting a strong smoky aroma. The flavor is quite malty with extreme smokiness and a dry bitter finish. Mrthirstyneck (341), Minnesota, USA
| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Jun 16, 2008 Dam this is tasty shit. Smells of smoked salmon and maple bacon. Pours with little head, copper/burnt orange color with some cloudiness. The aroma alone is enough for my score. but the taste all the way to the party this stuff has on my palate is just delicious. good thing i stocked up! bobinlondon (843), Harrow, Greater London, England

It took me 10 years after my first visit in 85 to manage to get back to Bamberg at the right time of year to try the big brother of the regular Marzen beer that I had fallen in love with. On a cold crisp winter’s night in Frankonia, this amazing warming beer really comes into it’s own. Bursting with a multitude of luscious flavours, dominated by the incredible smokiness that I lust for. I’m going back this winter and I can’t wait! daknole (3002), Scottsdale, Arizona, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Jun 12, 2008 Ok so I really REALLY dislike this style of beer. I could see cooking with it, but drinking liquid ham is not appetizing to me. I will give an average score across the board due to the fact that this is probably a great beer of the style...but not for me. grimreeser (797), Minnesota, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 11, 2008 Pours dark brown with a large tan head. Aroma of smoked ham, a little caramel. Flavor is slightly sweet. A little too much smokey meat for me, I prefer the wheat one. AR (437), Georgia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 8, 2008 This beer has a strong, smoked pork aroma, very similar to a jar of bacon bits. The flavor is more like a char-grilled beef, one which is cooked on the well done side. Very tasty.
