smith4498 (278), Miami, Florida, USA May 1, 2008 Pours dark ruby red with off white head. Strong aroma of smoke. Flavor is more smoke and beef jerky. Tastes like liquid BBQ, kind of strange. This is definately something I could only drink once in a while. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Smoked beers are just too wierd for me.
hellbilly (817), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Aug 7, 2008 clear ruby brown pour with a beige head and light lacing. the aroma is nice mellow smoke but not charred or ashy... earthy, malty sweetness and grass. the flavor is somehow warming... it reminds me of REAL amish lebanon bologna... sour, meaty/umame, spicy and rich slow robust smoke. it’s not astringent or overly smoky and masking the other characteristics... it’s a very refined and well calculated amount. medium body, slick mouth feel and a nice acidity. awesome with a roast beef sandwich and fudgey chocolate brownies.... ToddA (8), California, USA does not count Aug 5, 2008 I favor the Marzen but this is a good sturdy beer. I enjoyed this November ’07 at the pub in Bamber. Prefer it on tap via gravity over the bottled product here in the US. Doesn’t seem to have the best shelf life in the bottle.
Pronounced mothfeel with smoke and hop bitterness vying for attention. Not something you would chug. Good for sipping outside under the heatlamps on a cold Bamberg night. bp (270), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 2, 2008 Bottle: pours a clear dark brown with a foamy white head, aroma of bacon, smoke, taste is also bacon and smokey, a watery mouthfeel. Good smoked brew. mansquito (595), Boston/Philadelphia, USA Jul 29, 2008 Pours with a somewhat quickly dissipating head and a reddish dark brown body. The beer can be smelled from about three feet away and it smells like a smokehouse: peat, bacon, wood, and all that. The taste is slightly sweet and really intensely smoky. The front is less smoky than the finish in my opinion because the front tastes more like a normal bock beer with a little bit of fruitiness and a bunch of malts. Leaves a really intense aftertaste as well. Cool. Would be hard to drink more than one of these I would think. hiddenvariable (181), pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 16, 2008 pours a deep mahogany that is surprisingly clear for as dark as it is. gorgeous reddish tint to it, with a pretty thick creamy and cream-colored head, which lasts and lasts. wonderful smoky, meaty, woody, peaty smell to it. it’s like beef jerky without the beef. also, some distinct caramel notes, and even a bit of what seems like white grapes and pear. interesting. similar in the taste, but with some nutty malt and some spiciness that didn’t come out in the nose. again, very interesting. lightly bitter in the finish, with a lasting smoky aftertaste, and a great creamy mouthfeel. medium body, and a ton of carbonation. if you like rauchbier, this is a great one. not the best beer i’ve ever had, but a pretty exceptional example of the style.
