Perm (140), Tryon, North Carolina, USA Apr 8, 2008 Appearance: A cloudy bronze-brown with a thin lacy antique-white head.
Nose: Not as overwhelming as it could be. Fruity esters, white pepper, brown sugar, raisins.
Taste: Raisins, caramel, cooked apples, pear.
Palate: Very spritzy, nice and dry.
Overall: I love this style of beer -- this is not my favorite exemplar of the style, but at $5/bottle it’s hard to argue! As a beer, it’s wonderful. As a dubbel, it’s average.
I’d be tempted to try cellaring this one.
My favorite part, actually, is the bottom-of-the-bottle yeasty "dregs" -- brings out a nice nutty quality, and more pronounced cooked apples. Very good with sweet seafood-in-cream-sauce pasta.
Straling (29), Amstenrade, Netherlands Oct 3, 2008 Bottle 33cl.
Pours a clear red colour with a good size lasting head.
Smells of raisins and spices, rather distinct.
Taste is very warm and fruity and goes down with a nice alcohol touch.
drjay44 (160), Colorado, USA Sep 29, 2008 750 ml. bottle..Pours a rich creamy head, good duration, pleasant copper color....nose of sweet malts, some minor fruit overtones....initial taste rather bland, then malts, with minor spices, finishes rather lighter than expected. Mouth feel slightly watery. Mes_and_Sim (4476), Highgate, Greater London, England Sep 29, 2008 A Mes rate: bottle from Bierfest in Barca. Rather pale coloured for a dubbel with a thin off white head. Creamy Belgian malt aroma that is almost worth a seven. Good fruit and spice in the flavour that is supported well by the good malt. Lovely hint of liquorice in the finish. Decent stuff. hombrepalo (500), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 15, 2008 750ml bottle, Pours mahogany color, lightly hazy and with a creamy beige head that lingers and leaves some lacing. Aroma is molasses, spice and slightly tart fruit. Flavor is sweet and fruity, peach, raisins, yeast, spice and a lingering bitter aftertaste. Medium body and gentle carbonation. Nice beer.
downender (1612), Bristol, Gloucestershire, England Sep 14, 2008 Bottle from Corks, Bristol. Mahogany coloured with a thick, tight off-white head. Aroma of caramel and red fruit. Flavour was very sweet, to the point of being cloying, with a touch of spice, raisins and a short dry finish. A syrupy residue was left in the glass. Not for me.
