| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 30, 2004 Picked up at Whole Foods in Austin, Tx. Pours a dark chestnut brown, slightly murky with a tight, frothy, mocha colored head. Malty aroma with some dates and raisins. Flavor has some toffee elements with a bit of underlying chocolate. Faint notes of spices, very faint, on the back end with mint as well. Mouthfeel is pleasant and creamy. A very pleasant diversion, good winter warmer. diabel (1372), Aarschot, Belgium

Averagily large, frothy, light brown head, which is mostly diminishing. No lace. Red-brownish, clear body. Lots of particles of average size. Nose of cookies. Lightly sweet, moderately bitter initial flavour. Lightly bitter, lightly sweet finish. Lightly alcoholic. Fully bodied. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Nice aroma, but disappointing flavour. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 27, 2004 Another one of those ballistic Belgian corks! ... but not quite enough carbonation once it gets down to the actual drink. A nut brown color. Pours a nice, long lasting head with Gothic lacing. Aroma is very full, fragrant, malty-yeast. Tastes sort of like root beer going down and flavor has lots of hoppiness with hints of sweetened coriander and saffron, and a strong cola aftertaste. Overall this brew doesn’t hide the 9% that well, but still does much better than any high-octane brew at that level from any other country than Belgien. The overwhelming positive is that, despite any downsides, this is still a classic hi-octane Trappist-style ale that people have enjoyed for generations, and one can get pretty plastered QUICK! Truly a nice cadence to pump out those Christmas farts during that regimental caroling crap!
