bhensonb (3017), Woodland, California, USA Jul 2, 2008 Bottle from the "Walnut Creek" BevMo. Bright copper color with a white ring for head. Fresh caramel aroma with a hint of bitter. Near medium body with mild carbonation. Flavor is light sweet malt with a little bitter for balance. A bit buttery; a bit grassy. Clean and refreshing. Whether it matches the style? It drinks very well, and I am finding it a break after a 10% barleywine. This is actually a very good lager. And I think it fits the style.
DYCSoccer17 (2040), Davis, California, USA Sep 26, 2008 16 ounce bottle purchased at BevMo in Natomas, CA. Aroma is musty and metallic with some sweet notes as well. Not overly aromatic or impressive. Transparent dark golden body with a medium, frothy, white head and fair lacing. Some sweet, chewy malty flavors are present to start. A bit of an oily body is present. Light metallic notes with also a little bit of noble hop spiciness to finish. Has a bit of banana-ish ester flavor, too. I’m not a huge maibock fan, but I suppose this is par. Wulfstan (481), California, USA Sep 22, 2008 This is an outstanding maibock. It is light amber with a very large light tan head slowly shrinking to a thin head with some decent lace. The smell is rich bread, crust, hints of hay, pine, honey, raisins, and herbs. The tatse is full-bodied, complex, and interesting, yet smooth and highly drinkable. It has honey, raisins, grapes, lightly toastyed bread, herbs, grass, a hint of pine, some wine and a spritzy-juicy quality, smooth, with great balance. mjg74 (1808), La Mesa, California, USA Sep 12, 2008 Bottle from BevMo, La Mesa. Medium golden in color. Moderately sized head. Sweet malty aroma with a bit of graininess. Sweet flavors up front with a little bit of bready maltiness and some grains. Light hop bitterness in the finish. bb (2168), Martinez, California, USA Jul 26, 2008 Bottle. Light amber beer with a whitish head. Big honey malt aroma. Sweet honey, malt flavor with caramel and light grass. Medium bodied. Lingering honey, caramel, light mineral, and light grass. robertjm (240), El Cerrito, California, USA Jul 16, 2008 Thick foamy head. Dark golden body. Very tight carbonation. Lots of pop when first opened the bottle. Aroma is almost nil, but its got a nice light hop character to it. Fresh malty body. Heavier than the beer I had the day before. Frankly, much better than the beer I had yesterday. Hops in the aftertaste and on the palate. This is a Maibock I’d buy again! (also bought at Walnut Creek Bevmo, like the previous reviewer.)
