harlequinn (2746), Tacoma, Washington, USA Aug 6, 2006 This was a really weak example of this style, and I had higher hopes for this, but I was disappointed. Overly yeasty and spicy, with some overpowering flavors, and a bit too much of a perfumey aroma, and the rest of this is just left in a bland state of watered down flavors.
joss (3044), Garching b. München, Germany Jun 24, 2008 Bottle. Milky yellow, creamy head. Apple aroma, almost like a Apfelweisse. Light to medium body, fresh apple and banana flavor, light spice, relatively quick finish. Good on a hot summer night. IrishBoy (2013), Bakersfield, California, USA Jun 8, 2008 .5L bottle from Hollingshead Deli; Nose of bananas, cloves, but not real estery; very liughtly hazy pale brown with a large, light tan head; flavor is peppery, grainy, with background light apple fruitiness. Not a great hefe! BlackDonald (610), On a beer trip all over the USA, California, USA Jun 5, 2008 Good, but just short of being great. Pretty textbook in my opinion. Clove and bubblegum nose, with just a hint of spicy mustard seed. Grainy toasted cereal maltiness, almost chewy, a little too much effervescence, but still highly drinkable, just out of order in a couple of areas. Angeloregon (1488), Portland, Oregon, USA Apr 22, 2008 From a bottle purchased at John’s Marketplace--Poured a murky mustard yellow haze with a small frothy white head that lasted. Yeasty banana-clove profile with more of a bubblegum presence than many German hefes. Gritty, earthy, and pleasantly aromatic. Lots of fruitiness and phenols present in this gem of a beer. Loved it! TAR (1993), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA Mar 28, 2008 Rusty yellow. Soapy white foam quickly disperses but hangs around. Pleasant nose exhibits honeydew melon, plastic and yogurt-covered bananas with a distant note of clove, bubblegum, and black pepper. Slight oxidation (bottling date indeterminable). Sharply effervescent on the palate. Briskly dry and virtually weightless, initially, with a sweet tailing of wheat which clings and coats the palate while lending a pie crust sweetness. Fruitiness is subdued, though vibrant bubblegum esters pleasantly compensates by seamlessly merging with the spicy phenols. Invigoratingly crisp and well-attenuated, though some flabby banana taffy and a hint of baked apples are a slight detraction. Rather muted, but well balanced. Finishes with a cleansing flash of clove and plasticy phenols along with a sweet pineapple fruitiness which lingers. Yeast pour bolsters the body by imparting a claylike earthiness which clings to the starchy wheat. While the esters and phenols could stand to be more expressive, this is pretty good, and certainly much more respectable than their boring dunkelweizen.
