| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 5, 2006 Updated: Dec 1, 2007First time I had this beer, I wasn’t too keen on it and thought it was a basic amber ale. Second tasting (June ’06 rerate) was much better. Usual appearance, good initial head and good lacing, amber colored (not as deep a copper as I like in an alt). Malts were mildly sweet and moderately rich: nutty, bready, very light caramel. Hops were bittering, nicely done. Unfortunately, a little bit too much fruitiness sticking around in the aftertaste, leaving this a bit sloppy for the best of the alts, yet a good stateside example. Third tasting, 3/07, a little too malty, although the comments stand. Re-rate on draft, 11/07: A product that is continually slipping, too imbalanced to the sweet side to be a stellar altbier. Sweet, slight breadiness, caramel, in need of more toasty nutty notes and more balancing hops to be a better example of the style. Appearance within style was a bit weak too. No lager crispness anywhere in this product. kamish (92), Lake Stevens, Washington, USA

However, this is a beer that I liked a lot more before I sat down to rate it. I think that this might be a very good beer that is nonetheless overhyped. (For an excellent beer that lives up to the hype, try their smoked porter.)
Alaskan Amber pours red-orange with a small tan head which dissipates quickly.
If you like malty beer, you’ll be very happy with this alt. After the pour I thought I’d opened a bag of walnuts. The aroma is nutty, toasted cereal with a detectable herbal hop aroma.
The beer is medium bodied and chewy, and very appetizing. Drink this at your next cookout and you won’t be disappointed. elduchey (12), Venice, California, USA

Great amber color with a small white head. Very sweet caramel flavor with no hint of hop. I was excited to see this beer on tap so I passed up the Chimay to try one. Big mistake on my part.
This beer is over rated.
