The malts are almost too much. Easy drinking, yet couldn’t have too many and certainly couldn’t drink quickly. Silphium (2160), Haslett, Michigan, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 9, 2004 On tap at the Skidmore Fountain open-air market in Portland, 7 August 2004. Wouldn’t have guessed it was an altbier, but that makes sense. The body was quite malty with layers of caramel and touches of toast, but grassy, spicy (almost peppery) hops provided a nice complement to the malts. Good stuff, even though it was served out of a plastic cup for $5. BiddleBrau (335), Midland Park, New Jersey, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 14, 2009 Really pretty beer. Copper like a new penny. Smells malty/caramel - caramel really comes through the taste, quite sweet but not in the sense of candy, malt is forefront, pretty complex, really - think i taste some hazelnut or even oatmeal. Slightly bitter finish. Really a nice beer. I’ll admit to a slight bias due to the ’sense of place’ component - having comsumed dozens of these (only decent tap @ small town bar) on either end of a backcountry float I do in AK every year or two. crajun (100), , Texas, USA
