Commercial Description:
Richly malty and long on the palate, with just enough hop backing to make this beautiful amber colored "alt" style beer notably well-balanced.

’Altbier’ is a beer style usually only found in brewpubs in the US. I was thrilled to find this beer in a 6-pack! As a beer style, Alt is an ale that is fermented and aged at lager temperatures. This gives this beer the caramel and nut flavors of an amber ale with the smoothness of a lager. Bravo!!

Pours a nice copper with a decent tan head. Sweet malty aroma, mostly caramel. Nice sweetness, easy to drink. Palate is a little thin and fizzy. OG has the bestest mom in the whole wide world! Thank her for me. I will grimreeser, I will

Usual appearance, good initial head and good lacing, amber colored (not as deep a copper as I like in an alt). Malts were mildly sweet and moderately rich

First time I had this beer, I wasn’t too keen on it and thought it was a basic amber ale. Second tasting (June ’06 rerate) was much better. Usual appearance, good initial head and good lacing, amber colored (not as deep a copper as I like in an alt). Malts were mildly sweet and moderately rich: nutty, bready, very light caramel. Hops were bittering, nicely done. Unfortunately, a little bit too much fruitiness sticking around in the aftertaste, leaving this a bit sloppy for the best of the alts, yet a good stateside example. Third tasting, 3/07, a little too malty, although the comments stand. Re-rate on draft, 11/07: A product that is continually slipping, too imbalanced to the sweet side to be a stellar altbier. Sweet, slight breadiness, caramel, in need of more toasty nutty notes and more balancing hops to be a better example of the style. Appearance within style was a bit weak too. No lager crispness anywhere in this product.

Draft at Von’s Seattle. A typical amber in color -- a nice, deep russet -- and in flavor -- a good balance between sweet and bitter. A well-executed amber.

Bottle 355ml @ [ Tasting in Ulfborg ].
[ Courtesy of kpresley77 ]. Clear medium amber color with a large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, hay, roasted, nutty, cream-caramel, light hoppy, grass, light to moderate yeasty. Flavor is moderate to light light heavy sweet and light bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. (110708)

Looks nicer than it tastes, with an unsurprising clear dark amber filling the glass. Smells malty and nutty, tastes the same with some slight caramel. Light hops are welcome. The malt is pretty good in this one, pretty flavorful and not too watery. It’s not a beer that’s going to change your life but I like it a lot more than the other ambers I’ve had.
