Dec 10, 2009 2009 bottle. Deep mahogany pour with ruby highlights and a small white head. The aroma has a really nice balance of smoke, cocoa, herbs and spices and brown sugar. The flavor is also excellently balanced subtle smoke, cocoa, and a touch of spice. Body is creamy, full with soft carbonation.

Dec 8, 2009 2009 vintage 22 oz. bottle- Pours charcoal black with a perfect head and excellent lacing. The flavor is smoky and malty, this beer is so much better than Stone smoked porter, which is crazy because I think Stone is a much better brewery. This is an almost perfect Porter, the aroma is the only weak point.

Dec 6, 2009 10 oz sample from bomber. 2009 vintage. Smoky, toasted malt aroma. Pours almost black with medium head, awesome lacing. Nice bitterness which lingers. Maybe a little thin, just a bit watery. Could have a bit more body. Excellent porter, despite these flaws.

Dec 3, 2009 2009. Dark and slick in the glass and an oily whipped cream head. Strong alder? smoked/burnt aroma. Smoke character is so gentle, so persistent, so friendly. It just hangs there and gets my attention without demanding it. Evenly met by the dark and roast forward malt backbone, neither side competing. I’d cellar a bottle, but I hear the smoke goes away over time, who would want that?

Dec 1, 2009 22 oz. bottle from South Bay Drugs. Pours near black with a small tan head. Aroma of campfire smoke, wood, roasted malt, chocolate, burnt toast- very cool. Flavor of smoked wood, chocolate, roasted malt, molasses, vanilla, hops. Smoky, bitter, and roasty. Good balance, as these often just seem like smoke over everything else. Medium body. This is a great smoked beer.

Nov 26, 2009 Updated: Nov 27, 200922oz. bottle, 2006 vintage. Purchased from Bottleworks in Seattle in 2007 and cellared since that time. Roasty, lightly sweet and nicely smoky aroma, notes of coffee, black bread, caramel, faint wood and dark chocolate. Dark brown-black color with a lasting, fine tan head. Flavor is roasty and sweet to start, some sugared coffee aspects, turning lightly fruity and bitter, the smoke and some faint bitterness coming though on the finish, along with suggestions of dark, dried fruits, toffee and chocolate. Very smooth palate, the effervescence no doubt having mellowed somewhat but not to any detriment. Body is medium-full. Amazingly drinkable and refined. Really nice.
