The smokiness ends up tasting fake to me (like liquid smoke used in cooking). A robust dark brew but the thinness destroys it. Very conservative. Gets better as it warms. paiste2002 (158), Saugus, California, USA

Great smoky aroma. Taste is complex bittersweet chocolate, coffee, malt, smoked wood, vanilla with a bittersweet smoky finish. This is an incredible beer, I look forward to it every season. Great hickory smoke alarm setting off aroma. Taste is complex but too mild. Bittersweet, dry, oily, woody, vanilla, malt in the taste. Bittersweet smokey wood after-taste. pepperford (115), robbinsdale, Minnesota, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 25, 2008 Pitch black like a stout with a medium brown head. Be aggressive with the pour and the head is quite impressive and worth a photo. A bit more carbonation than a stout. Loads of tobacco, chocolate, malt, and a thickness on the mouth feel, that again, teaters on being a stout. Fun beer, unfortunately, i live in bf egypt, so i may never get another chance. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Aug 25, 2008 Smoky, game meat flavor. I remember it having a similar taste to the moose sausage I would try a few days later. Light coffee flavors begin, but shoved abruptly to the side by more toasty malts. Light floral hops. durhambeer (1217), Durham, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 24, 2008 Bottle. This beer tasted like Alaska: huge notes of smoked salmon, meaty, some coffee, and a bit wild. Admittedly, I’ve never been... but it matches my image of Alaska, at least. Very good, and great use of the smoky meat flavors. ZiggyG (131), Gladstone, Oregon, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Aug 23, 2008 Poured black with a small filmy head. Smell is of smoked meat, kind of oily like a tuna can. Taste is definately smoked but its more subdued than in the aroma. Some definite coffee on the back of the tongue. Palate is velvety smooth and medium, nice for the style. This is a nice brew, probably the best I have had in this style. cbeers21 (576), Miami, Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 21, 2008 OIly black with little to no head, but leaving a ring around the glass. Obvious smoked scents, infiltrating woody coffee, chocolate and vanilla aromas. Band-aids and pine as well. The taste is similar to smell with generous smoked prevalence, a light acidic sparkle with a bittering hoppy dryness and mocha/espresso flavor on the exhale. A nice smokey coffee porter, solid and tasty.
