Commercial Description:
The dark, robust body and pronounced smoky flavor of this limited edition beer make it an adventuresome taste experience. Alaskan Smoked Porter is produced in limited "vintages" each year and, unlike most beers, may be aged in the bottle, much like fine wine.

Bomber bottle...opague dark brown with a light brown sugar head...smoked gouda aroma--pungent....smoky smoky and good...only problem is not much else is showing through...I get some dark roasty malts...and a bitter coffee/toffee but it takes a minute to register....ok letting it warm up a bit....44 minutes later its basically the same, very overbearing in the smoke department, a bitterness(very mild)in the finish..this would be great with a smoked gouda and bologna and cheese sandwich...just in general...a food paring with this beer should be had...like a spoonful of red raspberry preserves...whoo hoo!

(2007) The beer pours almost a pitch black. The nose is a rich mix of smoke licorice coffee and chocolate. The head pours a very active light brown that is mostly lasting with a thick lacing that follows down the sides of the glass. The brew taste great with a rich mix of roasted malts and just a hint of the fine smoke taste. I was worried that the smoke would over power the beer but it works nicely.

Bottle purchased from local store in Northwest. Poured black with 0 head and 0 Head retention. This beer had the aroma of burnt bacon (Not Good). I would compare the flavor to chewing on a used match extremely harsh. As I choked this one down my stomach began to rumble causing me to run to the head and lose it all. I woke up with the worst hangover I have ever had and I did not even catch a buzz. BUMMER!

From bottle - 2007 : Pours very dark and pretty carbonated. Big brown head, about a finger and a half forms, with thick lacing. Somewhat smokey aroma, with some meat smells. Roasted as well, with some toffee and dark fruits. Taste is alot of the same as the smell. Not as much toffee though. Medium body, with a smooth feel going down. A sticky sweet aftertaste. Pretty good.

2007 22oz bottle - pours deep brown with a faint tan foam that dissolves to a light skim of fine bubbles on the beer surface. Aroma is smoked meat and light roast. Flavor is similar with a slightly salty smoke, roasted malt & faint coffee & burnt toffee notes. Smoke is firm and assertive but a little less pervasive than some other smoked brews. Finishes with a light bitter flavor. Medium palate and low carbonation.

rating is for a 2005 version drank in 2008. the appearance of this beer is opaque black with some nice thin tan head. the smell is very complex. i detect smoke, toffee, chocolate and upon swilling the beer, the smoke seemed to rise from the glass. i also detect some nutty malty sweetness. the taste is as complex as the smell and consistant. this beer has WAY more dimension than the 2007 i tried not too long ago. the mouthfeel is very heavy and full and should be an example for this style. overall, i could easily drink a whole big bottle of this by myself, but would love to share with friends.
